The more I look at our offensive line, the more I wonder how Caleb has survived thus far.

So, I've been taking a harder look at the offensive line and looking at some past games of the Bears to really lock in on what the Bears really need going into the offseason.

And shit, it is NOT pretty.

First things first - Chris Morgan HAS to go. And thanks to Flus going, he most likely will. It would be criminal to keep him. Part of the reason this line is so ass is because a lot of his blocking schemes have the linemen going horizontally instead of vertically. It plays against their power and results in a washout a lot of times - think of the time when you saw the entire line on their ass. It's why when linemen leave the Bears and go elsewhere, they immediately look better.

Now you got the individual players.

Unvarnished truth on all of them, PFF's shitty stats be damned (they don't know shit) - Going off of ESPN's depth shart I mean chart:

LT:

Braxton Jones - consistently getting bullrushed into the pocket. He's a swing tackle on a good team.
Larry Borom - dogshit
Kiran Amegadjie - I reviewed the Washington tape, and man, was my initial impression of him wrong. He looks SO outclassed out there. He really struggled with getting his man squared up (when he wasn't blowing assignments) out on the edge on pass pro. Thing is, when he did get the right guy and did have his man squared up, there were some really nice reps there. But if the edge issue is going to continue to be a thing, he might be better at guard. Could be a good replacement for Tevin, but I feel like he needs at least one if not two NFL offseasons to get himself right for the NFL - it just looks like the skill gap was way too big for him in Washington and he hadn't acclimated yet. I see the potential But it isn't enough for me to pencil him in as a 2025 starter - no way. Let's see if his outing tonight vs the Vikings can change my mind.

LG:

Tevin Jenkins - best lineman when he's healthy and on. He's injured and inconsistent too much, so they will let him walk, especially with a draft that is supposedly rich with guard talent.
Ryan Bates - Who? Seriously. Best ability is availability. Should not even factor into the equation in plans for 2025.
Bill Murray - great comedian, below average offensive lineman (currently on IR). Not worth considering for future plans. He's depth.

C:

Coleman Shelton - Below average-to-at-times-terrible center. Position needs to somehow be addressed in offseason to save Caleb's life. Way too many free runners up the A gap to consider Shelton a long term solution.

Doug Kramer Jr - also dogshit. Better fullback than he is an Offensive Lineman.

RG:

Matt Pryor - Below average offensive lineman. Honestly just a "guy" who would be considered decent "depth" on a good team.

RT:

Darnell Wright - his first year was more impressive than this one. Right now, he's easily the second best player on the line and he's only playing just slightly above average. Nothing special, but nothing terrible either. Just playing like a standard RT in the NFL. He's the only position that is solid across the entire line. And again, not spectacular. Not pro bowl level by any stretch. But at least he is a decent starting RT, even on a good team. Can upgrade, but if you go that route, he's the last position to touch. Way too many holes elsewhere.

Jake Curhan - who? Honestly just another "guy" who likely wouldn't make the roster of a better team.

When you look at the group as a whole, Darnell Wright is the only one you can pencil in as a starter. Everyone else, across the board, needs to be replaced. We are on the hook for Bates until 2025 but you can't assume he's your starter next year with all the injuries this year and not seeing what he can do. Shelton is on a one year deal and will be gone. Jenkins will be gone. Kiran is the only interesting prospect on the roster and you can't start him because he is still in over his head (I think a year in an NFL weight room and a better offensive line coach can help miles with this). Braxton Jones is someone we are stuck with for 2 more years, and in a year where the draft offers no clear tackle help early (the top first round tackles project to be guards in the NFL), you may be on the hook one more year starting him.

Everyone else is completely disposable.

Like, as an offensive line roster goes, this is one of the worst I think I have seen in the NFL this year.

No wonder Caleb has a record number of sacks. Surprised he hasn't gone out with a concussion yet...

i honestly think Poles was trying to redshirt Kiran so he won't get fired once people see how far from ready he is....and how do you become ready when you're a 3rd round project, you get experience through playing, except when you're not ready and get your QB killed. This dude should spend all winter in the USFL or whatever it's called getting reps....something...otherwise Poles spent a 3rd rounder on "attributes" that can't help the team. Mike Brown dropped to the 2nd round because he didn't have amazing attributes, one of the best safeties I've ever seen with natural football instincts...**** the RAS...can they play football or not yes or no?

and btw, I used to subscribe to Rob Rang's service before he joined CBS....he had a diamonds in the rough column before the draft on linemen, and every year Belichick would grab one or more of these dudes in the 2-4 rounds and they kept Brady clean. I'm wondering if time to get off the Poles train

Yeah - I knew Poles neglected the O-line, but when I really broke it down, I was like "holy shit, I knew it was bad, but I didn't realize it was THIS bad."

Chris Morgan has a large hand in this as well. His blocking schemes are shit, and I've heard them called out more than once by some of the former NFL QBs who put out those evaluation vids on QBs, like Kurt Warner, Tim Jenkins, and Chase Daniel. They'll be looking at Caleb on a play and then randomly be like "wait, WTF are the linemen doing up front?"

The OL should be a big investment area for the Bears in both FA and the draft

Yeah - the thing is, I don't know what will really be available in FA. You tend to overpay for a lesser tier of talent 99% of the time. All the "big names" people get excited over at this part of the season usually end up either signed or franchised by the start of FA in March, so its hard to know what is REALLY available until the tag deadline passes.

Much easier to keep a QB clean when a guy like Brady throws as quickly as he does.

I am aboard the "Shoot Chris Morgan Into The Sun" train.

Let's not forget that he was also promoted to run game coordinator this season and came out of the month of September averaging 1.2 YPC.

Too many times I see linemen not even getting beat as much as looking completely lost out there. He should have been fired with Waldron, but I get that in season firings are complicated. You can't replace an entire staff midseason.

The Bears still need more bodies, but a better coach will clean up a lot.

Agreed on Morgan, whoever the HC or OC is, the OL coach needs to be aligned with the offensive philosophy and not just hired or retained because they were a good coach somewhere. Waldron and Morgan were at odds on how the run scheme should be and the Bears have never recovered from that. Also, the Bears were not a top run dominant team the last few years. Herbert had a high ypc and Fields was just plain stupid with his run ability, both inflated the numbers, Fields more so.

Caleb holds the ball for 8 seconds and gets sacked. Admits he holds onto it too long on 3rd down instead of trying to make a play because he’s a loser who would rather make his OL look bad than have another incompletion like Slime Jr at Colorado.

WHY DO THE BEARS HAVE THE WORST OL EVER?

Poles demanded the new OC keep Chris Morgan. That was the stipulation, Morgan stays.

Is there a pattern here?

Thanks for this breakdown!!!

If it weren't for this long winded attention whore of a post I would have never guessed that an OL that has given up 56 sacks and has CW eating sacks at an 11% rate would be the main problem on this offense. I honestly thought the only issue was Swift, but thanks to this ground breaking analysis that those who actually watch the games could already see and have posted about numerous times already on this very board...I see now that the o-line is the biggest issue.

We can only pray that someone in the Bears FO sees this post and decided to do something about it

Here's the thing. I mean, Here's the thing.

Fields made the o line better.
Caleb makes the o line worse.

Water is wet.
Fire is hot.
You're fat.
