My favorite teams
So, I've been taking a harder look at the offensive line and looking at some past games of the Bears to really lock in on what the Bears really need going into the offseason.
And shit, it is NOT pretty.
First things first - Chris Morgan HAS to go. And thanks to Flus going, he most likely will. It would be criminal to keep him. Part of the reason this line is so ass is because a lot of his blocking schemes have the linemen going horizontally instead of vertically. It plays against their power and results in a washout a lot of times - think of the time when you saw the entire line on their ass. It's why when linemen leave the Bears and go elsewhere, they immediately look better.
Now you got the individual players.
Unvarnished truth on all of them, PFF's shitty stats be damned (they don't know shit) - Going off of ESPN's depth shart I mean chart:
LT:
Braxton Jones - consistently getting bullrushed into the pocket. He's a swing tackle on a good team.
Larry Borom - dogshit
Kiran Amegadjie - I reviewed the Washington tape, and man, was my initial impression of him wrong. He looks SO outclassed out there. He really struggled with getting his man squared up (when he wasn't blowing assignments) out on the edge on pass pro. Thing is, when he did get the right guy and did have his man squared up, there were some really nice reps there. But if the edge issue is going to continue to be a thing, he might be better at guard. Could be a good replacement for Tevin, but I feel like he needs at least one if not two NFL offseasons to get himself right for the NFL - it just looks like the skill gap was way too big for him in Washington and he hadn't acclimated yet. I see the potential But it isn't enough for me to pencil him in as a 2025 starter - no way. Let's see if his outing tonight vs the Vikings can change my mind.
LG:
Tevin Jenkins - best lineman when he's healthy and on. He's injured and inconsistent too much, so they will let him walk, especially with a draft that is supposedly rich with guard talent.
Ryan Bates - Who? Seriously. Best ability is availability. Should not even factor into the equation in plans for 2025.
Bill Murray - great comedian, below average offensive lineman (currently on IR). Not worth considering for future plans. He's depth.
C:
Coleman Shelton - Below average-to-at-times-terrible center. Position needs to somehow be addressed in offseason to save Caleb's life. Way too many free runners up the A gap to consider Shelton a long term solution.
Doug Kramer Jr - also dogshit. Better fullback than he is an Offensive Lineman.
RG:
Matt Pryor - Below average offensive lineman. Honestly just a "guy" who would be considered decent "depth" on a good team.
RT:
Darnell Wright - his first year was more impressive than this one. Right now, he's easily the second best player on the line and he's only playing just slightly above average. Nothing special, but nothing terrible either. Just playing like a standard RT in the NFL. He's the only position that is solid across the entire line. And again, not spectacular. Not pro bowl level by any stretch. But at least he is a decent starting RT, even on a good team. Can upgrade, but if you go that route, he's the last position to touch. Way too many holes elsewhere.
Jake Curhan - who? Honestly just another "guy" who likely wouldn't make the roster of a better team.
When you look at the group as a whole, Darnell Wright is the only one you can pencil in as a starter. Everyone else, across the board, needs to be replaced. We are on the hook for Bates until 2025 but you can't assume he's your starter next year with all the injuries this year and not seeing what he can do. Shelton is on a one year deal and will be gone. Jenkins will be gone. Kiran is the only interesting prospect on the roster and you can't start him because he is still in over his head (I think a year in an NFL weight room and a better offensive line coach can help miles with this). Braxton Jones is someone we are stuck with for 2 more years, and in a year where the draft offers no clear tackle help early (the top first round tackles project to be guards in the NFL), you may be on the hook one more year starting him.
Everyone else is completely disposable.
Like, as an offensive line roster goes, this is one of the worst I think I have seen in the NFL this year.
No wonder Caleb has a record number of sacks. Surprised he hasn't gone out with a concussion yet...
