I enjoy reading the posts here, but haven't posted before.
I don’t mind the player, I do hate how we got him, and would have done things differently.*My issue was the “cost”, but what was the alternative? Yes, I know we could have taken him most likely at 3 (see I hated how we got him). I thought the smart play was to not over draft a QB at 3 and go defense. But that’s why I’m not a GM I guess.
What nobody is talking about is the other scenario.
We stay put at 3 and pick the defensive player of your choice – doesn’t matter who for this example.
Then, we sit back expecting a QB to fall. Except what DID happen, starts to happen. Teams start to move up and there is a run on QB’s. What would it have then cost Pace to move back up into the mid first round to get a guy, that may have not even been the guy he liked, but feared nobody of quality would have been there in 2nd? I realize there may have been someone left, but when you start to see multiple teams move up to grab QBs, you really would be happy if he didn’t react to that?**
What would that have cost? I assume more than what we gave. Next years 1st? I really don’t know.**
If he didn’t move up and sat at 2, we would have grabbed a QB everyone would be upset with. Or we would have skipped a QB, again, and everyone would have again, been upset.*
Now with our 1st*rd. impact defensive player and all our picks (if we didn’t trade up, and they all were “descent”) we would have been a mid 500 team next year (picking in the middle), and had to spend to move up to be in that QB class discussion. Or traded for another QB that would have cost. what did NE want like a 1st plus for JG?
Again, it's debatable who the best QB is. I would have stayed at 3 if I wanted a QB in the first and picked who was there, or moved back a spot or two in hopes to still get them. But again, I’m not a GM.*
