The skateboarding thread

I hope I'm not the only skater on this board. Anyone else into skating? The 70s is when it really took off and paved the way for the current style of skating. Nothing in the world feels better than bombing a hill or carving a bowl.

lol what. I agree that I like 70s skateboarding a lot better, but skaters nowadays are ballsier than ever. Clearing 20 stair sets, megaramps, fullpipes, massive handrails, etc.

I used to skate maybe 8 hours a day 365 (unless it was swim season, which was year round, but primarily high school winter season). If it was snowing, we were in a house garage or parking garage. I was doing big stairs and handrails. I was never very much good at pipes, snakes, bowls and what not. Very much a street skater. I went to Arizona for college and was planning on skating every day and getting sponsored. Yeah. It was way too hot. After college I really cut back on skating. I only pull it out like once a year. I think I just made enough money to do other hobbies that I wanted to, like rock climbing, homebrewing, hunting, etc.

That's actually the kind of skater I am. I don't take it too serious. I just have fun with it, but I can get VERY pissed when I keep fucking up on a trick. Screaming, throwing my board, etc lol.

Damn good shit, got any footage? I can't remember when I didn't skate. I grew up with it at age like 10. No matter where I was going I would skate there. I'm not super good or anything but I can do a random variety of flip tricks. Double Tre's, Triple kickflips, backside double flips, etc. Never got into grinding, got way too hurt trying when I was younger haha. I can do the basic shit, boardslides, 50s and sometimes 5-0s. I can manual forever. Literally if you gave me an infinite smooth hill to skate down, I would never stop manualing.

I had one friend who was so good. Like at 16 everyone knew he'd go pro. But he started smoking weed and drinking a lot in high school, kinda stopped skating. He still does skate sometimes but he never pursued it. I mean he's only 23 now so he could totally push for it but he just doesn't want to I guess. I always try to push him to take it more serious.

Jeez. I never had a camera, but my friends did. I would have to track them down for footage. I started when I was like 8 or so because my older brothers had old 70s skateboards. It was more about just hanging out with my friends and getting stoked on everyone landing new tricks. My best big trick was probably kickflip tailgrabs down 10 stairs. Pretty tame by today's standards. I always hated grinding rails. Slips out so easy, especially round rails. I much prefer a flowing street line with small sets of stairs and ledges to grind/drop, whatever. I used skating as my transportation most of the time. I had a stationwagon in high school so that was convenient for friends chucking decks in the back. The PIT (which is sadly closed now) in Rockford is the park we used to go to all the time, if you know of it.

But some of the most fun we would have was playing SKATE (like HORSE with skate tricks instead of bball shots) in someone's garage when it was snowing outside. We would also have like shove-it/kickflip/360 flip competitions to see who could do the most in a row without touching the ground. Man, I miss skating. Maybe I will get a new deck this spring.

yeah playing skate is always fun. I started skating everyday I could again this summer. Felt really good. Keeps you in shape too. kickflip tailgrab down a 10 set? damn. good shit. The biggest stair set I cleared was a 7 set. I was only like 13 when I skated it, still really surprised I was able to do it at 13. I was more fearless back then I guess lol.

Yep. That played a big factor in my skating. My fear of wrecking myself grew as I got older.

i used to go skating with my buddies on Christmas day. Every business was closed so we could get away with skate spots that were normally very off limits. I think I need friends that skate again. It is more fun to skate with groups. You get stoked on them doing stuff which helps amp you up.

Got my youngest son a skateboard a couple years ago when he was 8 and didn't take him long to rip his leg up when he fell going down hill. But he still wanted to do it so we bought all the pads and helmet and he'd still bust himself up and then get all mad when I'd tell him to take a break from it. He still looks forward to getting it out every summer. Don't like seeing my boy get hurt but I love his moxie.

You got a true skater there. Tony hawk chipped both of his front teeth the first time he tried grinding so don't give up on him yet lol

When I was in elementary school, Lance Mountain (professional skateboarder) lived in the same city as me. He was about 10 years older, but we used to watch him skate all the time.

Btw, thug life to skater dude is pretty radical transformation, no?

I used to skate. I kept getting hurt though and it was starting to interfere with other sports, so I quit. Plus the dudes I skated with slowly stopped as well. I often still dress the part though and a lot of people always ask me if I skate haha.

As a kid, I would skateboard a ton. Especially around the streets of Chicago in the 80s. That was just mad fun. Then I had a mad growth spurt which led me to quitting. I'm 6'5" and while some taller guys can skate, I just lost most of the fun I had when my center of gravity was much lower.
