I was watching QVC this morning and they were featuring an item called the Thundershirt for dogs. It is suppose to soothe anxiety in dogs by applying gentle pressure. I was wondering if anyone has tried this and if it really works. If so, it's a shame they can't make one for humans as an alternative to medications.

I know there are many days I could use a Thundershirt as opposed to a Straight Jacket.

They really should put that on humans. It would calm me down if I was watching a Hawks OT playoff game. Am I the only one who thinks it looks like the dogs are wearing flak jackets?

As ytsejam posted a link to it they do make these for humans. They're used for autistic children mostly. That's where the idea for the thundershirt came from. I have one for my dog. It works. Not amazingly but enough to him from trying to burry his head into when I'm trying to sleep and there's a storm.

I heard Jonathon Brandmeier a couple months ago interview the guy who created these. Sounded like an interesting concept and Johnny B gave some to some listeners to try on their dogs. Never heard back about if they worked out not..

I could be completely talking out of my ass, but I believe this is based on a concept whose example I can only recall in hearing an interview about an autistic consultant for slaughter houses that developed a system prior to "the kill" where the cows were placed into a similar harness that applied pressure to the animal to reduce the stress of the slaughter line. She has come up with the idea as similar behavior helped her in her own autism where I believe she would wrap herself as tightly as possible with bed sheets when she was all autistic-ing out. As Phranchk has stated above.

In essence? I believe there is a lot of truth in these products.

hmm we've actually considered getting one for our little Pomeranian, Max. he is terrified of fireworks and really loud thunder. I always feel so bad for him around the 4th of July

It makes some sense. I like to cocoon myself when I sleep I. tuck the blanket in all around me. It gives me a feel of safety and helps me sleep I am a very restless and nervous sleeper.

Yes, there was a documentary on the lady who did this. Temple Grandin. It was a pretty good movie and story. She revolutionized the cattle industry with her techniques. She had seen how the cows calmed down in those devices and built one of her own and it helped her emmensely. Those hug shirts and other pressure devices have helped countless autistic kids since......and now dogs.

Bri I would like to volunteer to be your personal thundershirt. I believe I can provide gentle pressure to help calm you down.
