I really don't know how Columbus got credit for the discovery when there is so much evidence to the contrary. I guess history is what certain groups want it to be...That applies in other areas as well I suppose...

I really don't know how Columbus got credit for the discovery when there is so much evidence to the contrary. I guess history is what certain groups want it to be...That applies in other areas as well I suppose...
Spain had massive reasons for promoting the legend of Columbus. Primarily to cement their claims to the new world against Portugal. Additionally, it was to serve as a warning to countries like England, France and others to stay away. They used the pope as a pawn in this effort

This was also exacerbated by the beginning of the protestant reformation two decades after the original voyage and the recent hostilities between "true" Catholics and the Avignon Papacy. (not to mention that [just for some further historical context], this was also the period that was the height of the inquisition). There were almost innumerable reasons for the Spanish to promote Columbus as a hero of sorts, and most of them were economic, political, or religious.
