Taking a vacation over Holiday Break to New Orleans. What and where should I go/do?

Hornets are playing when I plan on being there, so definitely checking out a game.

Also, haven't bought the tickets yet, but help on where to stay would be appreciated.

New Orleans is the shit hole of America. Filthy and smelly place. The French Quarter is interesting for about an hour.

I did go to Marti Gras years ago dressed as a sheik accompanied by Minnie Mouse and Elvira but that is a whole other story.

I haven't been there post Katrina, so I'm really not sure how things are there now. But, general recommendations....

- The French Quarter is pretty cool in general. Walk around, but I would try and stay in the touristy areas as much as possible...especially at night. Don't want to wake up missing a kidney.
- Grab some coffee and a beignet at Cafe Du Monde. Good shit. Hang out in Jackson Square a little. Right across the street.
- The Garden District is nice
- Some really old / cool cemeteries if you are into that sort of thing.
- Great blues music all over the place. I have gotten shitfaced many o time at the Funky Pirate. Big Al Carson kicks ass.
- The street cars are kind of cool.
- They have a decent Art Museum.

Not sure if you like drinking or not. If you like to party, it is definitely a fun town. It is a little dirty though. I would never go there for Mardi Gras. Did once and it was miserable. Way more fun when it isn't that crazy.
