Well, duh.

But I don't even like the whole premise which seems to imply that being an atheist means that you are somehow inherently bad.

It is my understanding that some religious folk think atheists are evil

I don't eat babies.

I just don't believe in god.

I'll still help an old lady across the street, plus I won't rape her with a baseball bat.

This pope and church have a lonnnnnnnnnng way to go besides the lip service of the quote posted above.

They just need a leader that can get them past the 17th century.

[edit]

This should also be a topic in the no-no religion section of the forums.

All a formality for bridge building. Pretty sure that there are some that need to hear this statement. The fact that the Pope said it is rather huge in the religious circles.

Depends on how you look at it.

In non-religious circles it's just lip service.

I just see it as he's about 7.5% more open minded than the previous pope.

If he's building a bridge, all he has is one nail and no hammer.

Obviously outside of the religious circles this is a pointless statement. My point was more for the closed minded that need to hear this from a religious leader to begin to open their minds (or consider to).

As a non-believer why would you care or even comment?

Because as a non-believer you cant avoid believer comments. They are everywhere.

This Pope's job is to do nothing but look all humble and slight-of-hand so that we all dont keep looking at:

The Catholic Church is perhaps the most foul organization that has ever existed in the span of humanity.

I grew up catholic-- so that religion had an impact on my life.

I'm now an atheist, and religion can still have an impact on my life, whether I want it to or not.

The Catholic Church, The Democratic National party, and the Republican National Party. All three are about tied as the most foulest organizations to stain the face of the planet.

Just to throw some fuel on the fire.

Anyhow, I know t's just lip service, but let's see if his message takes.

Yep, I'm not a huge Christopher Hitchens fan but this quote by him fits this so well, especially when it comes to this new, "good" Pope:

"Let me tell you something: for hundreds and thousands of years, this kind of discussion [questioning religion] would have been, in most places, impossible to have, or those like us would have been having it at the risk of our lives. Religion now comes to us in this smiley-face, ingratiating way — because it’s had to give so much ground and because we know so much more. But you’ve got no right to forget the way it behaved when it was strong, and when it really did believe that it had god on it's side."

Ha! I prefer Doug Stanhope when discussing the pope Mr. FuzzyWuzzyPope the First replaced:

----

I’ve heard so many comics doing bits about this new pope, “Oh isn’t it scary this new pope used to be a Nazi?â€

“Not when you look at their track record side by side. The Nazi’s versus the Catholic church?

The Nazi’s only lasted a dozen years and they got their ass handed to them in a high hat. The Catholic church has a far more prosperous and prestigious record of murder and torture and tyranny and oppression and nonsense. Not to mention the kid fucking, and they’re still around and popular than ever. I’d be far more afraid to hear someone go, “You know that new Nazi…he used to be a pope!
