Thoughts on Sale's first start

Just curious what everyone thought? I watched the game with a friend who is a fellow Sox fan, and he was a little concerned that Sale gave up three runs, because he's of the opinion (which is somewhat supported by past history) that Sale will slow down in the 2nd half, and if he's not pitching 7+ innings of no run or 1 run ball in April and May, he's screwed. I thought it was a terrific start. The peripheral numbers were fantastic, the WHIP, strikeouts to walks. The third run was inherited, and with a little better bullpen support the ERA would look great too. He started picking up strikeouts as the game went on, meaning that he was handling the batters the 3rd time in the order when they should have been adjusting better to him. The umpire was squeezing him all day, but he only gave up one walk (to be fair, I have no problem with the ump yesterday, as he was squeezing the Twins' pitchers too and was pretty consistent with a tight strike zone). And his velocity held up throughout the game.

I'm also optimistic that Sale will hold up for the entire season with no slow down, as his work load shouldn't be any greater this year than last year, and as he continues to enter his physical prime and work with major league conditioning coaches he'll be more prepared to handle the grind of 30+ starts.

He pretty much made one mistake on a slider that hung and even then, the catcher hit a bleeder through the infield. Sale is a true number one starter. I'm not worried really with our starting pitching other than Danks but I am concerned with our pen.

Not worried in the least. He's fine. We only made a couple mistakes pitching the whole day. Didn't like Belisario throwing an 0-2 fastball that gave up a run to Suzuki

Was questioning leaving him into the 8th but he was feeling it for a while there with 10 straight batters retired. He looked sharp, maybe he can get the (meaningless) W's to get some more national recognition this season.

7+ innings of no or 1 run ball is setting the bar kind of high for anyone. No worries about Sale
