He has obviously done a shit job with guys like Soler and Heyward. Virtually the entire team has plate discipline problems. Another bad trait of the Cubs is continually trying to pull every pitch regardless of the location and hitting weak grounders or totally missing the ball. Researching this guy and there seems to have been similar calls for his firing last year

It's the sign of a true meathead idea to want to fire hitting/pitching coaches. I'm not saying the guy shouldn't be fired but to fire him for the team's poor hitting in a series when they just had the #3 offense in baseball (in terms of OPS) and when you've seen clear improvement in a lot of the players on the team feels weird to me. We truly do not possess the information to decide whether or not a hitting coach should be fired.

Because what you do in JUly really doesnt matter. It's about how you respond and your training under the gun in the WS. The Cubs dont have that discipline

It's funny to me that after all these years, you could possibly believe the Cubs think that's true.

They might fire Mallee, I have no idea. But I can guarantee you that the reasoning will not be "we fired Mallee because our team had a bad playoff series". That's simply not how this organization thinks.

I mean, were the NLDS and NLCS not pressure? Did they not "come out of a funk" and respond strongly in games 4, 5, 6 of the NLCS? What if the Cubs hit well tonight and game 6 but lose in 7?

For a person who takes such pride in calling out posters for opinions that are "stupid", it's highly ironic considering how many terrible suggestions about the team/organization you have.

The idea of coaching is that it has to count when it matters. These guys aren't prepared. They are undisciplined with no concept of the strike zone which is killing them when they most need it. The coaches bear some of that responsibility

Again, did it not "matter" in the NLCS and NLDS when they were hitting? Did it not matter in the first two games of this series?

This is a classic overreaction by you. Just because you lose doesn't mean that someone was so bad at their job they should be fired.

I only blame coaches when they are consistently not putting guys in places to succeed. But the Cubs are 5-37 with RISP in this series, at some point the coaching is not the problem.
Learning is a function of teaching. Cubs havent learned. Part of that is on the Coaches, same as in any sport

Luckily for Cubs fans everywhere, Mallee's fate is in the hands of a team president and future HOFer with multiple World Series rings, and not one of the dumbest fans on the planet:

"Cubs have morphed into one of the worst teams in baseball. Not a chance in hell they would win a single playoff game."

Jesus Omelette. This is a young squad that tended to revert to type in the playoffs. If this was a more experienced team I could see firing him but these guys made great strides this year.

Heyward's problem appears to be more of an issue seeing the ball. He just isn't getting around on fastballs although he has looked a lot better over the past few at bats.

The youth of this team is showing its true colors. The good news is that even with that we are still going back to Cleveland with our relatively anemic hitting. The better news is that this team is gaining post season experience and hopefully won't have the butterflies it had before.

Do an internet search and you will see there was discussion last year about firing the hitting coach.

Numerous MLB scouts have said that Heyward has one of the worst swings they have ever seen. So it's not an issue of "seeing the ball".

here's a thought for you:

or they are just young and inexperienced?

this team is built for the long haul. the guys struggling are not seasoned vets with a window of opportunity closing, they are kids that are just getting started.

If it's on the internet it must be a good baseball thought!

Bear in mind, this is the klutz that uses ESPN and Sports Illustrated for his info and considers everything coming out of the east coast to be baseball acumen.

We are asking a group of guys (Contreras, Baez, Addison Russell, Kris Bryant, etc) to perform to their maximum ability on the biggest stage -- when none of them have even played two full seasons in the majors (well, except for Bryant). I think what we are seeing in the WS has less to do with the hitting coach and more to do with youth and inexperience.

Good thing the Cubs didn't try and pull the ball last night. Glad to see Bryant hit a HR by going opposite field and then Rizzo follow that up by hitting a double that missed by 5 feet of being a HR by going to the opposite field. Then Zobrist also tries to go the other way (while swinging 3-0) and hits a screeching line drive to both reach base and move the runner over. Then Ross tries to go the other way and lifts the ball in to the outfield and scores the game winning run. All because they were not pulling the ball. Great hitters. Glad we didn't try and tell a team of young, pull hitters to stop pulling the ball. They'll never get hits pulling the ball.
