Tom Ricketts and Player Acquisition | Cubs

Interesting little article about how the Cubs finally took some first baseman this draft.

My favorite part talking about Vogelbach:

If DJ Lemahieu stood to his right, they would form a “10.” He moves like a pregnant yak. Not exactly what I would picture as Wilken’s platonic ideal of a first baseman.

It's amazing for 5 years we didn't take a first baseman before the 15th round.

No wonder Justin Bour is our best 1B prospect.

I think he made the point that you can turn just about any athlete into a first baseman, but that precludes you from getting the best hitter possible you you'd stick at first anyway. So that's why the Cubs ended up with a bunch of crap-hitting first basemen.

Yeah I mean anyone can play 1B so Wilken tends to go after MI that can basically play any position on the field.

Unfortunately he tends to go after scrappy light hitting useless MI whose bat won't translate to another position.

I do still fully trust Wilken especially first couple rounds, but would like to see him take more guys like Vogelbach who aren't exactly athletic but can hit the ball a mile. I do fear this was his last draft for us.

I think they have to take a more Moneyball-like approach to the draft so the farm system isn't flooded with light-hitting 2B/SS and CFs  Wilken's drafts with the Cubs have been mostly "meh"...
