Tommy Wiseau has officially announced a 3D version of The Room

For being a god-awful film, Tommy Wiseau’s The Room isn’t doing half bad for itself. Not only has the film achieved cult status over the years, with showings being consistently sold-out worldwide, but it has even been adapted into a critically-adored biopic (filmopic?) entitled The Disaster Artist starring James Franco.

Honestly, whoever thought that we would hear the words Tommy Wiseau, and Oscar mentioned in the same sentence? While, unfortunately, we won’t be seeing Wiseau stand alongside James Franco at the 90th Academy Awards this year to celebrate a win for The Disaster Artist, Wiseau has just informed us that there is something else to look forward to.

Sure, you’ve seen The Room. However, you haven’t seen The Room… in 3D. That’s right. Put the eye-drops down because you’ve read that correctly. On Twitter, when asked if we would ever see The Room in 4K quality, Wiseau not only confirmed 4K, but another way to watch as well:

Well, that’s it. We’ve reached the apex of what 3D can do for cinema. Forget silly things like Avatar. Forget Avengers: Infinity War. Once we are able to see Johnny, and Mark play catch… with a 3D football… when that happens, well, then 3D can pretty much retire as a technology. Runner up: a 3D empty water bottle coming right at viewers faces.

Tommy Wiseau Claims 3D Release of The Room is Coming

Tommy Wiseau claims that there’s a 3D version of The Room coming out. At this point, it’s hard to really make this movie’s journey any more bizarre. But perhaps converting such a stunningly bad midnight cinema classic into a 3D format could achieve that. In light of the success of James Franco’s The Disaster Artist, The Room’s profile has never been higher than it is now.

Still, it’s not like The Room became a visual spectacle overnight. In fact, it’s still spectacularly terrible. But much like it became one of the most improbably re-watchable movies in recent memory, perhaps The Room 3D would be even more fun to watch. Although it’s hard to totally trust everything that Wiseau says, the mastermind behind The Room says his movie is getting its own 3D release.

Wiseau revealed his possible new plans for The Room when he responded to a Twitter follower on Friday who asked him if he’d release the film in superior 4K quality. Wiseau says that not only will The Room be released in 4K, it’ll also have 5.1 surround sound and be available in a 3D format. Wiseau rarely breaks any kind of hard news about The Room or any other projects, so this tweet would be a departure from the norm.

What ever happened to 3D anyway? I know superheros movies still get shown in 3D in theaters but most movies completely went away from it. I always enjoyed them.

Many things actually. A lot of it has to do with the lousy 2D to 3D conversions. Instead of filming with 3D cameras they'll make a half assessment conversion that isn't worth paying the bump up in ticket price to view. Secondly people find the glasses annoying. It also darkens the movie and that totally mutes the colors.

I hear that at CES they had some glasses free 3D panels. That would take care of two of the above problems but the studios aren't going to put more money into a film. James Cameron said he wanted to do the Avatar sequels implementing glasses free 3D but they tech isn't quite ready yet. It would also require theaters to upgrade their screensite and projectors. I'm not sure they're willing to do that.

I myself love 3D when done right, it adds to the over all experience. I have a 3D TV and choose to buy 3D blu-rays when giving the chance. I'm finding I'm having to import 3D titles because U.S. releases seem to be foregoing 3D for 2D and 4K versions.

There's only a few movies worth seeing in 3D. The last one for me was the live action Jungle Book.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I tried the 3D thing a few times and I couldn't stand the glasses. As someone that doesn't wear glasses/contacts, they hurt my eyes and gave me headaches so I always stayed away from them.
