With the hype, the failed Atlanta deal the sellers market.

Does anyone else feel let down by the fact that this is what happened?

I suppose, but a lot of this was out of the front office's control.

They needed Soto and Marmol to step up. They didn't oblige.

They needed Garza to be badass. He wasn't, and got hurt.

They were at the mercy of Dempster and Soriano's no-trade rights, and Soriano's ridiculous contract was also an obstacle.

That they were able to make lemonade out of all this is awesome. I'm satisfied. It could have been better, but that's not the front office's fault at all in my opinion.

My only disappointment (besides trading Reed again) is that we won't get to see any new players play for the Cubs... Yet. Even though I know we are going in a whole different direction, it is usually fun getting new guys who play right away.

That'll be in Stage Six of the rebuild.

Yeah, it could have been better, BUT it could have been a whole lot worse too.

I'm OK with the trades that happened. I believe we got positive value out of each. This said, I'm disappointed that we didn't get a strong arm for Dempster. I'm also disappointed that Garza was not traded and brought in a stud pitching prospect and another stud prospect of any position to come with him. Not surprised that Soriano wasn't moved, as I've figured he'd end up being a waiver-trade or an off season trade. Also, I'm OK with not losing his bat in the lineup and protection for Rizzo for the meantime.

It definitely would have been excellent to get Turner (or the like) for Garza to go with Delgado for Dempster... but neither of those happened despite having the great chance of it. Even with Dempster's ****-you to the team, Turner and Vizcaino would have been nice to have together next year. Oh well... I doubt Garza can make it through waivers, so we'll see him probably go this winter. Unfortunately, the fact that he'll be down to one season of control (and will probably get a significant raise through arbitration) will reduce his trade value. At least he won't be considered an all out rental, and the team will gain a comp pick if they lose him to FA.

The deal was that he his dollars for next year where yet to be determined. He was arby eligible and even with a crappy year he probably could have gotten 5 million plus next year. The deal was to get something for him as opposed to paying him next year. In some ways I was hoping that the Cubs would try to give him a shot next year because I am not a huge Castillo/Clevenger fan (each profile as backup players at best to me), but they made the call that Brigham was worth more than risk.

And we're still on what.... Stage 1, maybe Stage 2?

With the shape the team was in prior to the Theo hire, I'd say we are in Stage Negative Three right now :D
