My wife, son and I will be heading to Grenada to learn how to sail this July. We will be completing ASA 101,103,104 & 114 on a 44ft catamaran for a week. The end goal is to see how we like sailing and if we want to sell everything in 3 years and buy a boat of our own to cruize around the Carribean for a few years.

This is the boat we will learn on, a Leopard 44. I we do buy a boat it will be smaller ( and cheaper) than this ...probably something like a Lagoon 38 built around 2006.

First off, very cool.

Second, is a week of training really enough time? Sailing, in my limited mind at least, seems like something that takes years to learn.

Yes and no. People do buy boats and sail without any experience and sail around the world. This guy did exactly that https://youtu.be/dbf0BAYA5KY

For us this is to test the waters, so to speak, regarding living on a boat. After a week of sailing we may never want to sail again... If we like/love it then we will do a lot more local sailing before buying a boat and sailing off into the sunset.

Good luck.

Don't trust anyone to work on it for you. Learn and do everything you possibly can, yourself.
