J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens may go by the nickname Episode VII, and continue an ongoing saga, but it very much acts like a new beginning. The release of The Force Awakens kicks off a string of Star Wars stories planned by Disney and LucasFilm that will allow several other inventive storytellers to play in this particular sandbox – sometimes continuing the trilogy started by Abrams, and sometimes branching out to tell what once were known as Anthology stories, but now might not be the case.
You’ve just seen The Force Awakens. You are dying to see the NEXT Star Wars movie. How long do you have to wait? We’ve got you covered:
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Godzilla director Gareth Edwards has been hired to direct the first Star Wars spinoff story, meaning it has nothing to do with Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) or the rest of the characters from J.J. Abrams’ trilogy launcher. Instead, Rogue One will tell a story that exists between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, where Rebel Alliance soldiers work to steal the plans to the original Death Star.
Release Date: December 16, 2016
Star Wars: Episode VIII
J.J. Abrams passes the Star Wars baton to Rian Johnson, who will continue to develop the story that just began in The Force Awakens. Knowing what we know from Force, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson) and Snoke (Andy Serkis) will continue to make life difficult for Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega) and ace pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac). Benicio Del Toro recently snagged a role. But what part will Luke Skywalker play in the developing sequel?
Release Date: May 26, 2017
Young Han Solo Movie
The plan beyond 2017 gets a little murky, with several moving parts and fewer elements set in Star Wars stone. We know that Disney wants to do a solo Han Solo movie, and they’ve hired a few creative voices to guide the ship. Lawrence Kasdan will co-write the script, while 21 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie wizards Phil Lord and Chris Miller will share the director’s chair. No one has been hired to PLAY young Solo yet, but the studio is looking at hundreds of viable candidates. Tell us, who would you cast?
Release Date: May 25, 2018
Star Wars: Episode IX
All we know about Star Wars: Episode IX is that it will conclude the trilogy started in The Force Awakens, and it will be helmed by Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow. He’ll have access to Force stars like Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, though whom else sticks around for the duration of the story is beyond us, at this moment.
Release Date: 2019
A Boba Fett Movie
This is another one that has been rumored for some time, but complications behind the scenes led to a director change, and now the spinoff movie rests in limbo. Seeing as how the next four years have their assigned Star Wars movies mapped out, a Boba Fett film likely would be bumped to 2020. But there have been no powerful moves on this as of yet, so stay tuned to see what develops.
Release Date: Rumored for 2020
