WikiLeaks cables: US agrees to tell Russia Britain's nuclear secrets

The US secretly agreed to give the Russians sensitive information on Britain’s nuclear deterrent to persuade them to sign a key treaty, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

By Matthew Moore, Gordon Rayner and Christopher Hope 9:25PM GMT 04 Feb 2011

Information about every Trident missile the US supplies to Britain will be given to Russia as part of an arms control deal signed by President Barack Obama next week.

Defence analysts claim the agreement risks undermining Britain’s policy of refusing to confirm the exact size of its nuclear arsenal.

The fact that the Americans used British nuclear secrets as a bargaining chip also sheds new light on the so-called “special relationship”, which is shown often to be a one-sided affair by US diplomatic communications obtained by the WikiLeaks website.

Details of the behind-the-scenes talks are contained in more than 1,400 US embassy cables published to date by the Telegraph, including almost 800 sent from the London Embassy, which are published online today. The documents also show that:

• America spied on Foreign Office ministers by gathering gossip on their private lives and professional relationships.

• Intelligence-sharing arrangements with the US became strained after the controversy over Binyam Mohamed, the former Guantánamo Bay detainee who sued the Government over his alleged torture.

• David Miliband disowned the Duchess of York by saying she could not “be controlled” after she made an undercover TV documentary.

• Tens of millions of pounds of overseas aid was stolen and spent on plasma televisions and luxury goods by corrupt regimes.

A series of classified messages sent to Washington by US negotiators show how information on Britain’s nuclear capability was crucial to securing Russia’s support for the “New START” deal.

Although the treaty was not supposed to have any impact on Britain, the leaked cables show that Russia used the talks to demand more information about the UK’s Trident missiles, which are manufactured and maintained in the US.

Washington lobbied London in 2009 for permission to supply Moscow with detailed data about the performance of UK missiles. The UK refused, but the US agreed to hand over the serial numbers of Trident missiles it transfers to Britain.

Professor Malcolm Chalmers said: “This appears to be significant because while the UK has announced how many missiles it possesses, there has been no way for the Russians to verify this. Over time, the unique identifiers will provide them with another data point to gauge the size of the British arsenal.”

Duncan Lennox, editor of Jane’s Strategic Weapons Systems, said: “They want to find out whether Britain has more missiles than we say we have, and having the unique identifiers might help them.”

While the US and Russia have long permitted inspections of each other’s nuclear weapons, Britain has sought to maintain some secrecy to compensate for the relatively small size of its arsenal.

William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, last year disclosed that “up to 160” warheads are operational at any one time, but did not confirm the number of missiles.

It seems like the US and Russia were doing the right thing while the UK was acting like a *****. If everyone knew the number of missiles of each other it seems like it would be safer right? Plus the US gave them to The UK. I don't know why they would need to hide what they have. Maybe they are scared of getting raped in another war.

While I will admit that I do not know anything about this part of the Wikileaks but if even remotely true

it is what is scary about Julian Assange. He has a vendetta against the United States and is goint to (and

already has been) using the information he has to undermine our nation. He says the world needs to be held

accountable but as asked in the 60 Minutes interview, who holds him responsible?

I found the last 1:30 of this interview the most enlightening.

I actually find that even asking that question is the real telling and enlightening part because it infers that, for as much as "news" programs exactly like 60 Minutes or 20/20 or Dateline and every other mainstream "news" program, including the major networks, for as much as they drone on about potential corruption and crime in the government and how they are working tirelessly to "keep them honest", that they see what's being divulged and revealed through WikiLeaks as, to partially borrow a phrase, "too big to report on". That the crimes are too "important" or too far reaching for them to be investigated. So they throw labels around at the person who unwrapped these crimes. Traitor, treason, unpatriotic. Which of course, shows the media in general to be the bullshitters they are.

Here they encountered something that is out of their control. They don't hold the reigns on it. The government can wrongly hold the guy who revealed these crimes in prison all they want (which should be an eye opener to ALL OF US, that it's a crime to reveal the crimes of government(s)), the information is already out there. Just about all news is pre-filtered. They can spin it, twist the words around or outright lie or not even report on it most times before we even know it happened at all. That's what you get when a handful of corporations owns the stream of information that we are supposed to trust. It's a joke.

I pretty much agree with you, I find it rather hypocritical when people cry about government transparency, then when wikileaks reveals shit all of a sudden theres stuff "we shouldnt know" and wikileaks is criminal.

I think some people just want to keep a rosy picture of US foreign policy, at what good guys we are "supposed" to be, they want to silence anyone who would say otherwise, true or not.

I simply dont care, i know and accept the US isnt the beacon of freedom it presents itself as. That is the way it has to be, i understand and make my peace with that and dont love my country any less for it. I really dont understand the big deal of people finding out about it. its not like the british had no idea about this shit. MI-6 is no joke, Im sure british government was well aware of what we were doing, there was no big reveal. Nuthin to see here move along.

Until we live under a world government, that is the way it "has to be". Countries act in their own interest, just as individuals act in their own interest. I do accept we do these things without question, because i can't say I would make a different decision were it up to me.

This country owes just about everything it has to other cultures and nations. We live off the benefits of third world countries, an invisible empire. It's tough for me to just accept that without question, as the only way. That's accepting things like sweat shops, genocide and "ethnic cleansing". Now I know you are not supporting any of that, believe me I know. I know you wouldn't want any of that to happen. But by saying you accept the ways things are without question, you are in effect, endorsing those actions and situations as tolerable.

Nothing is stopping the governments of said nations where sweatshops exist from shutting them down. Its also a fact more often than not in sweat shops for american companies the workers are making more money (albeit peanuts to american minimum wage) than they could doing any other job in their nationn. Also, with child labor employed by american companies many of them are the only available earners for their families, no one is forcing them to work. Again, the people working in sweatshops are not slaves, they have a choice. Yes American companies are taking advantage, but its not like those workers really have any other options. If american companies chose to keep it in america then those people simply wouldn't have jobs.

As far as supporting genocide is concerned you are going to have to give me a viable example of American support of an ethnic cleansing.

"There are two ways to conquer and enslave a nation. One is by the sword. The other is by debt."

-John Adams

Physical slavery it may not be, but economic slavery it is. A choice does not exist for these people because there is something stopping the countries from shutting down the sweat shops and cleaning up. Three main organizations: the IMF (International Monetary Fund), the WTO (World Trade Organization) and the World Bank. They are the groups that keep these countries down. It is important to understand the "World Bank" is not really the world's bank in name. It is essentially an American bank. Why and how do they serve America and it's interests? The US holds veto power over any decisions that institution makes because they are the principal capital provider. And how did we get this money? We made it out of thin air like we do whenever we get money from the Fed through the fractional reserve banking system, where new cash is literally made out of debt.

Basically, the IMF, WTO and World Bank are on a global scale to what the Federal Reserve is to us in our country. They create these perilous situations by their actions. Debt is their weapon. What do they want? The nations' resources. Why? To maximize profit. It always comes down to that. Always, always, always. Profit at any and every cost.

Put a country into debt, through it's own indiscretion by taking on huge loans it has no way of paying back or by corrupting it's leader. Then impose conditionalities, or as they call it, "structural adjustment policies", such as funding cuts to social programs like education and health care as well as currency devaluation as part of the deal to "help them" dig out of their hole. Of course, it really doesn't help the people at all. Their welfare has gone to shit, predator countries can buy up their resources at the fraction of their original value now, and their environment is being ravaged by foreign corporations that have set up shop. Like Chevron/Texaco did in Ecuador with dumping millions of gallons of toxic waste into rivers, spilled thousands of oil barrels, and abandoned 900 toxic waste pits because it was cheaper to do it that way rather than dispose of it properly. Meanwhile children grow up cancer for the rest of their lives because of it. Maximize profit at any cost.

That's one small example, there are many others and many other countries that through the actions of these institutions, under American power, have been pinned down and put into subservient roles probably permanently because there is almost no way out from under these deals they had to cut just to keep their collective heads barely above shit. These institutions don't have to answer to any of this because no one is entitled to ask. They are protected by.....themselves. They say so. Neither World Bank nor IMF officials can be subpoenaed by national legislatures, nor can they be obliged to testify in court. No government can demand internal documents from them. Like the Federal Reserve, they are above the law and answer to no one. The world plays by their rules.

Now as far as genocide goes, I never said that America blatantly or openly supports them, even though the founding of the country itself was done by the genocide of the Native Americans. I only said that by accepting things as the way they work now without question, you accept, without question, the conditions that make things like genocide and sweat shops possible. I admit I wasn't very clear on that.

However since you brought up the question of it, there is an example I know of. They are known as the Ringworm Children of Israel. It was the mass irradiation of a hundred thousand or so young Israeli immigrants from Middle Eastern countries, the Sephardim. In 1951, the director general of the Israeli Health Ministry, Dr. Chaim Sheba, flew to America and returned with seven x-ray machines, supplied to him by the American army.

They were to be used in a mass atomic experiment with basically an entire generation of Sephardi children as guinea pigs. Every child was to be given many times over the maximum dose of x-rays through their head and among the rest of their body. Israel may or may not have had their own reasons for choosing Sephradi children, but us, good guy America who had just defeated the Nazis and unveiled their evil Holocaust of the Jews, it made no difference, we just needed living human bodies. Even though human radiation experiments was nothing new for government agencies to perform on unknowing citizens in America, an experiment of this size would be too risky to hold and keep under wraps.

The American atomic program needed a huge source of human lab rats and the Israeli government were more than happy to supply it. For doing so, and for reporting the results, the American government paid the Israeli government 300 million Israeli liras a year. To put that in perspective, their entire health budget was 60 million liras. 6,000 of the children died shortly after their doses were given, while many of the rest developed cancers that killed thousands over time and are still killing them today. While living, the victims suffered from disorders such as epilepsy, amnesia, Alzheimer's disease, chronic headaches and psychosis.

Watch the documentary, it's only about 45 minutes.

If I had to give sources and works cited for everything I've ever read and seen in order to come to the conclusions and understandings I've come to today as shown in that post, that post would be twice as long with the list of documentaries and books and interviews and articles and exposes and point/counter point debunking and mundane, boring (to the lamen) congressional hearings and debates etc, etc, the list goes on. So I'm not sure what you want me to do Mr. Ice Hog, I didn't know I was back in high school and was being graded on this. Other than that, I don't see what difference it makes. If I'm going to be held to that standard, everyone should be. I didn't just inherently know this stuff, that's a ridiculous notion, the same it would be for anyone else in any discussion like this.

yeah i was leaning toward modern. Like where in the last 20 years were we employing un-natural selection.

while that is fucked up, it isn't a genocide, and really, it isn't behavior I would put past the US government of the 50's, hell even now.

But still, I hold on to my belief, there will always be winners and losers in this world, and that will always be the case.
