Canadian GMs could be busy | Hockey | Sports | Ottawa Sun

Maple Leafs

The names of RW Kris Versteeg, G J.S. Giguere, D Tomas Kaberle and D Mike Komisarek have all been mentioned in trade rumours. Out of that group, Versteeg has the most potential to be moved. He could wind up back with the Blackhawks.

2 things:

1. Where would we get that cap room from?
2. Please for the love of god NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

moving bolland would help.

and getting versteeg does nothing for the hawks. zero! we would essentially replace stalbergs numbers (which blow) with another player who blows who gets paid alot. I thought GMs knew more than the fans.

1. Room is almost there for Steeger. If he's traded for Skille, around $300k would be the difference that would have to be made up to bring him in.

2. Yeah, there really isn't somewhere else the 3mil could work...like C or D?

You guys are overlooking the cap. If/when we aqquire a player we dont pay their full cap this season, after th current seasn we are responsible for th full capit, but thats why teams look for rental players

The almost $2.1 million figure I stated is the full season annual cap hit they can add to the roster atm.

I haven't been looking at their cap space.

If we aqquired Versteeg today his cap hit for the rest of this season would be 1,844,529.91

... of course Toronto (or Toronto fans or pro-Leafs writers), have had Tomas Kaberle "being moved" for years.

Literally every "Toronto trade rumor" almost always involves them moving Kaberle ... and the point is that it never happens ... and probably that Toronto fans, writers, etc ...are probably living in another realm of reality.

Just basing that upon past reading, and the fact that Kaberle always "just misses being moved" - ooooh we were so close this time. Why would it be any different for any other name on that list?

Broken record, really.

Personally I would rather have Havlat if he could be squeezed in.

Yeah, I know we would only be accountable for the cap hit remaining. The 2.1 number accounts for the daily savings and is the "full season cap hit" that they can add right now. We cannot afford him yet as Steeger's full season cap hit is over 3.

'Steeg is not going to help at all. IF the blackhawks get a winger it better be a great PKer, and a checking line beast.

Center and defense are the needs for this team right now.

He's not the first player I'd want the Hawks to deal for, but I'd definitely welcome him back.

I'd be happy to see him replace Skille if that could somehow happen.

I agree that we need a Center, definately a #2 Center, but it is a loaded winger market Tim Connolly and Jason Arnott are out there but still a bit too high for the Hawks. With the Hawks cap situation we would almost have to use these rental players, and maybe resign in the off-season. If we were to aqquire a player with more than 1 year it may costs a RFA or UFA, maybe even 2 or 3.

I haven't followed Steeger much this season - been playing in the Leaf's top six as expected when the move was first made? If so, I think he actually would help, but by me stating this doesn't mean I'm endorsing him. Here, he would add some finish to the bottom six, wouldn't be as "marked" because he'd be on the bottom six....granted, at a steep price. He can pk and check.

If we're looking at improving the pk, I'd much rather see it improved with a move at D. I understand Soupy wanted and needed to step up, but as well all know, Soupy on the PK is not his game. The PK forwards (Toews, Hoss, Sharp, Pisani, Dowell, Johnson (puke - yeah I know he's worked in this spot), Brouwer (when needed)) are not too shabby.

Just like we were trying to figure out in the other thread, I don't think Steeger is a good influence on some of the other guys off the ice. Im not saying he is a bad guy, but why would they bring in another guy for Kaner to party with?

They should just take that 1.15M and give it to a lucky fan instead...I could retire at 25 with that...
