Anyone on the boards read any 40k books or play any of the 40k games?

Its a whole Sci-Fi universe and it has a ton of book series, I have been reading them for 6 years and have probably read 40 or so books and yet there are a ton more to get to.

If you are interested check out http://www.blacklibrary.com/Getting-Started/New-Reader.html

I can recommend some books/series if anyone is interested.

The Dawn of War games are RTS PC games, they were alot of fun.... the Dawn of War II series was OK.

There was also a PS3/Xbox 306 game called Space Marine which is a Warhammer 40k game, it was fun, just combat and mayhem lol.

I am curious if anyone else is in to Sci-Fi like this?

Is this the same as the "board game" war hammer?

Don't think so... I believe there is a Table Top Warhammer 40k game and then similarly there is a Table Top Warhammer game with books and stuff as well.

I have not delved in to the Warhammer universe as of now.... Black Library sells those as well.

I never did a PnP RPG. I wish I had, just once, gave it a fair shot in their glory days, but no. Sorry.

Someone did buy me Hero Quest when it originally came out, and It remained in the shrink wrap. It's one of those things I had that went missing when I got out of the army. I didn't intend on keeping it NIB like that, I just never had anyone interested in playing it. IIRC that was made by the same people as warhammer.

No on Space Hulk, gotta look that up.

I have played all the Warhammer 40k RTS.... you talking about those or a new regular Warhammer RTS?

btw, warhammer isn't a rpg. Its a combat strategy game. Its like risk but the whole table is the board and you set up the landscape differently each time.

Here are the rts games. There are 2 of them and a bunch of expansions. Both are awesome:

There may be newer versions, I'm not sure.

Yup, I played both and the expansions.... DoW I was better than II IMO.... I played all of em including expansions.

In DoW II they got away from traditional RTS (base building, troop building, conquer the map, etc) and tried to make it smaller scale, much more squad based with no base building for the most part and they added an RPG element to DoW II... it was fun, don't get me wrong... but it just wasn't a sequel to DoW IMO... they should have just went and titled it something else and made it a different series.

The claim was DoW 3 was in the works and they were going to get back to bigger scale more traditional RTS but then it went on the shelf cause of junk going on with the developer studio.

I've read a couple of the space marine books. One of them was awesome and the other was just so-so. The story line of the book I didn't really care for was a little too weird, or too far fetched. I will definitely check out some of the other books though

Yeah some of the Space Marine battles books are just ok... idk if maybe you read one of those. They are usually just stories about single engagements of a Space Marine company and often don't have much of an engaging story.

The Horus Heresy series, which is essentially a prequel series to the modern age that the rest of the books are set in, that series is good.

Gaunt's Ghosts which is all about an Imperial Guard (normal human soldiers) regiment.... that series is my favorite, its on like the 14th book.

Ciaphas Cain series, which is all about an Imperial Guard Commissar and the units he is attached to.... only series I know of with great action and really good humor. Cain is a Commissar which are political officers, obviously based off the old Russian Commissars from WWII.... they keep the men in line, execute men for cowardice, etc. However, Cain is a character who is essentially a slacker that looks for the easiest duty where he can drink and gamble and **** bitches.... but ironically he winds up in some of the most rough battle zones possible with people looking to him as a Hero. All along you get his inner monologue in addition to his interactions with other characters so its pretty funny. This one takes a little time to break in to, but once you get into the first book it really is entertaining.
