Red Wings sign Howard to 2-year, $4.5 million deal

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP)—The Detroit Red Wings signed goaltender Jimmy Howard(notes) to a two-year, $4.5 million deal Monday.
Detroit didn’t want him to become a free agent this summer and he was content with the contract offered by the storied franchise.

Granted Crawford has less games under his belt, but depending on how he does in the playoffs, he could conceivably demand something in this ballpark, no?

I wouldn't think he'd get quite that much but, like you said, if he pulls a Jaro Halak in the playoffs I could see it being around that number.

Ive gotta think doubling his current cap hit would be fair for both sides which would make it $1.6MM/year.

1.6 does sound pretty solid... hes putting up great numbers, but is his first year in charge. Hopefully he is fine with giving a hometown discount in seeing the potential of the team, and how Niemi absolutely benefited there for a while in having a solid D in front of him. It will be a damn shame if we lose out on him though. Hes 7th in Save % and second in GAA.

Does anyone know if his contract has any bonuses in it right now thatll hurt the cap for like Calder or anything?

Didn't read the rest of the thread, but Craw isn't going to get that type of money. Initial figures have him around 1.8 mil per. Affordable even w/ Seabrook's contract.
