DENVER -- Injured Chicago Cubs pitchers Randy Wells and Andrew Cashner will be re-evaluated by team doctors on Monday, according to a team source.
If all goes well in the examinations, Wells could start a throwing program this week, according to the source. The Cubs are taking a more cautious approach to Cashner because he has a shoulder injury, and his return could be a couple of weeks after Wells'.
Both pitchers were placed on the disabled list on April 8 and have not picked up a baseball in almost two weeks. Wells is recovering from a strained right forearm, and Cashner is dealing with a strained right rotator cuff. They have been limited to range-of-motion stretching exercises and aerobics.
In his first major league start on April 5 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cashner, 24, threw 72 pitches in 5 1/3 innings. He yielded one earned run before leaving with tightness in his shoulder.
Wells beat the Diamondbacks in his only start on April 4, but said discomfort in his forearm first surfaced during his final start of spring training.
