What is a generational player?

I see this all the time here. “So and so is a generational talent or player”

Usually see it regarding Fields or whoever is the hot player to get drafted #1.

To me a player is generational if there’s only one of them a generation. That’s the guy. It’s beyond even a HOF player. It’s simply the guys no one in their right mind can argue about.

Brady, Rice, LT, Butkus, Reggie, Walter. Etc.

Thoughts?

I’m asking because @Clintk55 thinks Fields rushing ability makes him generational.

I would argue one aspect of a player’s game does not make you generational.

And for the Justin Defense Team this is not a shot at JF1. (Although I’m sure some will think it is)

For the record, I’m as high on Fields as anyone and have been before he even became a Bear, and even I have never used the term “generational player” about him.

I think the reason we see it thrown around in the case of JF1, is due to the bears lack of good QB’s throughout the years. Anyone that’s is really good to great will seem like a generational player to bears fans at that position lol

Finally, and most importantly, imagine debating on a forum not the players attributes (they can't be debated) in terms of being a generational running qb, but the definition of a phrase and how you use it. So by your own definition, a generational talent excludes every QB not named Brady since 1998. I'll be sure and let Manning know he was never a generational talent. My God how hard is it for you people to understand something special when it's right in front of your eyes?

I didn't say that and you created an entire thread over your inability to comprehend people use phrases for different things. If I said "generational quarterback" instead of "generational talent" you may have a point. As it currently stands his generational talent is his ability to run as a QB. Which was the original argument you keep moving the goal posts for.

And typically outside of Chicago Bears fans when you acquire a player at the most important position in sports and he's a generational talent in one area of the game two years in its pretty fucking exciting for everybody with two eyeballs.

To the bolded though - obviously Brady is generational. But based on your definition are you leaving out Peyton? Brees? Rodgers? I mean these are guys who set and broke league passing/TD records.

I'd say Mahomes is on a generational type player trajectory as well but have to see how his career ends up.

I don't see generational thrown around here much, except maybe Carter and Anderson. Carter has just as much of a chance to be the next Glenn Dorsey/Sedrick Ellis than he does Aaron Donald.
RGIII was generational for a season. Shawn Merriman looked generational before his juice spilt. Takes at least 4 seasons of greatness to say "generational".

It’s less about stats and more about being the best in an era. I don’t have a perfect definition …. Hence the thread. Manning and Brady would be. (IMO) Brees and Rodgers no.

I suppose there are different levels of generational talent. If you are a HOFer, I'd say that's good reason to call someone generational. There's only like 360 players in the HOF. And then you have guys like Brady who have completed defined the game for the past two decades in a different tier.
