What is your email address attached to? If it's attached and visible by facebook, then... well, they sell off information to dataminers. Or newsletters and so many other websites.

Also, if it's a gmail, yahoo, hotmail, well, nearly all free email account, they also sell off email lists. ISP's also do this shady practice to their "trusted" market research groups. Yeah, really trustworthy. The only benefit by this, is that they are able to provide huge services for free or at a low cost, because of these dataminers and research groups.

And thirdly, you have the random hits that are done by mass emailers from different spammers.

So to be safe, just treat emails like caller IDs. If you don't know it, don't click it.

im not on facebook with this yahoo address.

also, the email makes no sense, what are they actually trying to accomplish?

by saying "saw your email on facebook and you look nice, ad me at myon y!" than she gives a IM nick of some sort. nothing is out there on any of this. is it more or less malware or spyware?

thx foo

Yeah, that is refereed to as "phishing". The originator of the email is likely in a very poor country that works for some kind of scheme.

You get these in snail-mail too. They have been around since the pony express, and nothing will prevent phishers from reaching your email, other than the end user learning how to filter communications effectively.
