What some of you pay in taxes to live there is insane. Talking to a friend who lives in a modest home in kane county , a new home he bought in 2006 , which is still not up to the value he paid for it he said. His property tax bill is $ 12,000.00 a year. I know for some of you ( omeletpants ) that's probably not that much, to me that's friggen insane. I mean my tax bill living in northern Illinois ,$ 5,000-a year i was going through the roof but $ 12,000.00 a year.
Now one thing i can think of Illinois would'nt tax my pension like f-ing Wisconsin does so there is some bright side there.

we dont pay property taxes here in duh land down under. we do pay council rates. which is roughly 22-2500 a year in me area. i forget cause they just went up. n rates be the same on a 300k house as it be a 1.5+ mil house

I have 3200 sqft (5000 with finished basement) on 1 acre in Kane County and pay $11,800. I have no mortgage and pay no income tax. Do I think $11,800 is ridiculous...yes. But in the scheme of things, local/state governments are corrupt and waste money in one way or another. If I lived in NJ, NY, CA or Wisconsin I would have different tax problems just as bad as my real estate assessment

Are you being taxed for that finished basement?

From what i understand . if you dont have a ceiling ( drop tiles or whatever ) its not considered finished. I'm sure you know this .
Yes, my basement has a finished ceiling, 2 bedrooms, bathroom, fireplace

So in Cali I pay around 1.1% in property taxes (the bulk of which now is non-deductible thanks to the Blue-hating Congress), it's a ridiculous sum in and of itself because our housing is off the charts expensive.

However, our real property values increase +/- 5% annually and I'll take that arbitrage all day long. Paying a shit-lot doesn't hurt nearly as much when it results in a positive ROI.
