Off the list I would bring back - Burish

As for the list, I'd bring back Ladd and Sopel. Madden is a maybe, but I'd rather have Reasoner for that spot. I always liked Frazz (in a character type way), but we can do better.

Ladd was a heck of a grinder. We really missed him this year.
Byfuglien was an intimidator and a big body in front of the net who showed up big-time in the playoffs.
Eager was a solid player with a good skill set.
Sopel, good defender on penalty kills and a good alternative for Keith/Seabrook.

Sopel woul dbe the perfect guy to pair with leddy and would help our PK.

The other guys worth a damn would be too hard to get back.

Ladd - Obviously would love him back, but he's due for a big payday in Winnipeg. The Hawks aren't exactly in need of wingers, but Ladd is obviously an exception. Great tough player that's a proven winner. He really would be a great captain in Winnipeg... can't see him passing that situation up.

Eager - I think he's a good 4th line guy. He's fast, energetic and is cheap (still hasn't made over 1mil and really isn't due to). Cons are that he's not incredibly disciplined, but he was certainly less of a dirtbag on the Hawks than he was on SJ and ATL. I don't think that's a coincidence.

Buff - I love the guy. He's a huge body with deceptive speed that hits, scores goals and is a proven playoff performer. He's a great package that could really be an elite power forward. 3 problems with him: when with the Hawks, he would disappear for stretches in the reg. season, he's playing defense (this is a biggie) and he's getting paid a ton (this too). I've always been a fan of big skilled forwards and Buff has the potential to be a great one. Shame he's now a successful d-man.

Versteeg - Good player and a good team guy, but so far he's kinda failed to make the leap that a guy like Sharp has made. Wouldn't hate seeing him back, but I wouldn't bend over backwards to acquire him.

Sopel - He's due for a pay cut, right? And we all remember how frustrating he was, mainly during the regular season, right? I haven't seen him play lately and he did step it up in the 10 playoffs, so that's a positive in his favor. Hard to get excited over Sopel, especially when Meatball does his job better and has a much higher up-side.

Niemi - Very good goalie, though he was incredibly disappointing in San Jose's playoff run this year. He failed to steal a game or two against Vancouver and really wasn't there when his team needed him to be huge. He wasn't terrible, but it was disappointing to watch. Still earned himself a nice big contract and San Jose is a better team with him.

Fraser - Never had a problem with the guy. Seemed like a good teammate. That's about it.

Madden - Shouldn't have left in the first place. Was looking for one last nice payday (understandable) and ended up stuck in Minnesota, not making what he wanted. Would I take him on the Hawks for 1mil? Probably.

These guys all fall into 1 of 3 groups.

Ladd, Buff, Niemi- No chance they're coming back. Ladd is the only one that could be possible, but I'd give that less than a 10% chance of happening. Winnipeg is too good of a situation for him and he deserves it.

Versteeg, Fraser- Guys that could come back, but what for? I like both guys fine, but there's no need for them here.

Eager, Sopel, Madden- Likely to come back. Why are they likely? Because they all fill needs in this team. Eager would have come in very handy against the Canucks this past post season. Management knows that. Madden's a smart center that's strong on the faceoff and can kill penalties. Plus, I got the impression him and Kane like to party. Sopel is a mostly dependable defensive d-man.

Assuming Eager and Madden demand roughly what they were paid last year (Madden probably a little more) and Sopel takes a little less than his last contract paid him, I think all 3 would be fine, though not exceptional nor exciting. None of these guys are long term guys, but 3 low paid players that serve their roles while youth in the Hawks system continues to develop? Sounds ok to me.

Ladd and Buff ... the others you could do better.

Sopel, well I didn't vote for him... I suppose you could do worse, but you could also do better - if he took less than his current cap hit- sure, why not. But not for much over a mil in a season.

Madden, maybe I would ... he would be a good 4th line centre.

I expect Madden to come back.

Eager can come back if he can get some more women to flash him on TV.

I voted Buff because he's a big guy who can also score a little bit.

I voted Eager because I was momentarily possessed by Jesse Rogers.

Madden and Eager for the 4th line would be appealing.

Other's aren't gonna happen ever and I don't trust in Sopel another year down the line.
