Before you read this it is a bit of a downer topic, sorry....just a forewarning.

I got a call last night about 1030 my time that a shipmate and co-worker had passed away. Great guy, early 40s with 4 kids (2 in the military too, and 2 still at home). He went out for a run after work, and, well never made it home. We still dont know all the details yet, whether hit by car, heart attack or any other scenario you can think of.

Has hit alot of his hard, because the guy took real good care of himself.

Got me to thinking, seriously, with what is going on in the world, which is worse for those of us here, to have a friend pass away like this, or thinking about the friends that won't come home from the sandbox?

Exactly, death is death. The only thing you can hope is the person doesn't/didn't suffer. Either way though, they're still dead and it's still a tragedy.

Sorry about this one folks. I know it was a real downer, and probably geared more to the military people, whether active, ex or military brats. But my 5 year old literally had walked up to me just a day or two ago and asked me what would happen to him and Mommy if I wasn't there. Heavy, heavy, last few days.

Sorry for the loss but a sense of being humbled is sometimes a good thing especially for a family man. It makes you appreciate life and those that are close to us. It also gives you a different perspective when you are looking out for not only yourself but your family as well. That sense is even greater when you are serving in arms for the benefit of your brothers and sisters.

Thanks for what you do and your friend shall be in my thoughts and prayers as well.

I feel ya man, and I know sorry doesnt help. Losing a buddy is always rough, losing in the sandbox is a different animal and different feeling.

The only thing that I can say, that also helped me...

When I got back, I took some leave and visited with the families of those who I cared about gone. We spent a ton of time swapping stories and such and seemed to help them as well as helped me.

I will keep your friend and his family in my thoughts and prayers in this difficult time. I will also keep you in my thoughts and hope you find comfort in your memories of him. Big Hug.
