Now let's change the narrative to simply the most improved player. Here's Hub's take.
"The other day one of our readers asked me who I think will be the most improved player on the Bears this year?
Wow, that’s a great question and one I hadn’t really given much thought to.
What makes it so interesting is limited to players who were on the team last year it shines a light on what a true mess general manager Phil Emery and coach Marc Trestman made of this ballclub.
Veteran players such as Matt Forte, Jermon Bushrod, Jeremiah Ratliff, Jared Allen and Tim Jennings can play better than they have, but at this stage of their careers none of them are going to suddenly be significantly better than they’ve been in the past.
When you start looking around this roster for young talent, it’s really hard to find.
Kyle Long and Alshon Jeffery are already excellent players and building blocks for the future, and I suspect they will get better. But as good as they’ve been, qualifying for most improved would be quite a stretch.
Some of the players we should be talking about are Shea McClellin, Jordan Mills, Ego Ferguson, Will Sutton and Brock Vereen, but I’m sorry folks, I just don’t see it.
In addition to Long and Jeffery, the only guys GM Ryan Pace and coach John Fox inherited who I could see being real contributors once they’ve got this mess rebuilt are Bushrod, Martellus Bennett (assuming he doesn’t talk his way out of town), Matt Slauson, Lamar Houston (if the knee rehabs to 100 percent), David Bass, Jon Bostic, Christian Jones and Kyle Fuller.
I love Willie Young, but he’s a man without a position in this scheme.
Bostic is a good athlete who’s shown he can make splash plays but has been asked to play out of position and take too much responsibility ever since he got here. He was born to play a 3-4 WILL, and allowed to focus on just that, I think he might become a really good football player.
Fuller was the Defensive Rookie of the Month for September last year, but people keep talking about him as if he wasn’t awful and going in the wrong direction the past three months of the season. He was and he did.
But he showed us what he could do in September, and Fox and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio have both gone out of the way to make him one of the first players they mention when talking about players already here they might be able to build around.
Fuller needs to show a ton of improvement, and knowing Fangio’s and Ed Donatell’s track records, I expect him to be much improved.
Bass continues to really intrigue me, but picking him for most improved would be kind of like buying a lottery ticket.
Bostic and Fuller are my second choices, but there is one player I haven’t mentioned yet."
