Bob Brenly made the radio rounds today, explaining why he said no to interviewing for the Cubs job.

Bob Brenly said next Chicago Cubs manager will have cloud over his head if it's not Ryne Sandberg - ESPN Chicago

Another thing he said caught my eye

''I've said all along it would have to be the right situation,'' he told the Sun-Times last week. ''I don't feel an overwhelming need to get back on the field, but if the situation was right, absolutely I'd like to [manage]. But I don't need to get back on the field and take a manager's job just for the sake of being a big-league manager, and getting fired a year and a half into a three-year deal because a team sucked and the ballclub didn't want to spend any money. That's been my attitude from the beginning, and it still is.''

Not to read too much into that bolded quote, but I wonder if Brenly knows a little bit more about the future payroll than he meant to let on.

Brenly tells it like it is, whether Ricketts, Hendry, or whomever else likes it or not.

If his rants about Soriano and Ramirez didn't get him in trouble, I doubt this will.

The Cubs don't want to start another announcer controversy anyway, the Steve Stone debacle isn't that far in the past.

Doubt Bob bashed the franchise that his son plays in as much as you claimed...

oh yeah i know.. he said shit about us when he was arizona's manager..

as a booth personality he's not bad.. he is very critical outside of his position.. Which is fine by all means from an outsiders point of view..

We'll see what his employers think though.

He better be in that booth...
Yeah i really like Brenly not only will he call guys out, but he understands the game from a coaches viewpoint and and players viewpoint and is intersting to listen to in the booth. Kasper he is okay, but they could get someone better if they wanted to.

I figured he said no because he wouldn't have Johnson and Schilling in their primes at the front of the rotation....

That team wasn't suppose to win the WS, remember...Roids and pitchers helped, but the Yanks had the same situation...

Brenly knows the game, plain and simple. If he wanted to coach, there'd be a job for him. He's got the right to be picky, tho, especially if he loves what he's currently doing.
