During the preseason and off season activities, Fields will learn what to do with the ball in his hand and in the huddle and behind the center pre and post snap.
But how does Fields learn how to handle the NFL game day? You can't simulate that in any other situation besides being part of an NFL team, during a regular season game.
Therefor there is a legit reason to allow him to just get that experience in before starting a single game. Let him experience a game or two and what life is like in the NFL. Let him learn how to handle the media circus. In game adjustments. Reading the in game analysis on the tablets. Learning how to communicate with coaches and teammates on the sidelines. Getting used to game day travels. Learning how to last in a 17 game season, as opposed to a 10 game season. Getting an idea of the speed of the game from the sidelines. Get him in for a series or two along the way so he can learn the speed of the game in the actual game.
This isn't meant to baby Fields but is meant to allow him to come into week 2 or 3 without having to worry about anything else besides live game action, and allow him to experience the non-game action that often gets overlooked and could overwhelm.
