I agree, a very good reason to not take the advanced metrics seriously.

Boozer gets a high defensive rating cuz he guards thhe weaker low post player between center and pf.

No stat should be considered an end all to be all. Dennis Rodman once led the nba in FG%. It doesn't mean he was one of the best scorers in the league

And that's why geeks with graphing calculators shouldn't be writing articles for any major sports news outlet.

I'm looking right at you Hollinger :fist:

FG% has more to do with efficiency and sample size but i see your point

I hate advanced statistics. Stick to FG%, TPG, APG, SPG, PPG, etc. No need for all this PER, PPS (pts per shot per game)..

Also, anyone see Hollinger's Power Rankings? Sixers #1 in the NBA? Please. It's all based off of the Hollinger rating. Philly would get smacked by Miami & Chicago right now.

That's why they have the PER rankings and the Power Rankings. The PER rankings tell about a teams quality more then the standings do. The 76ers have been playing some great defense lately, that's why they are #1 in his rankings. Mixed in with their 6 game win streak and all the other factors he takes in.

During the 76ers current 6 game win streak, the most points they have allowed in a game is 93. Pretty impressive.

I'm not saying the 76ers are a great team, but I don't think they would "Get smacked" by the Heat and Bulls.

Plus if the Bulls were #1 in his rankings, no one here would hate the rankings. Power Rankings don't mean much honestly.

The formula is determined by..
RATING = (((SOS-0.5)/0.037)*0.67) + (((SOSL10-0.5)/0.037)*0.33) + 100 + (0.67*(MARG+(((ROAD-HOME)*3.5)/(GAMES))) + (0.33*(MARGL10+(((ROAD10-HOME10)*3.5)/(10)))))

SOS = Season win/loss percentage of team's opponents, expressed as a decimal (e.g., .500)

SOSL10 = Season win/loss percentage of team's last 10 opponents, expressed as a decimal (e.g., .500)

MARG = Team's average scoring margin

MARGL10 = Team's average scoring margin over the last 10 games

HOME = Team's home games

HOMEL10 = Team's home games over the last 10 games

ROAD = Team's road games

ROADL10 = Team's road games over the last 10 games

GAMES = Team's total games

Absolutely wrong. I hate those made up bullshit stats, no matter who is leading them. Bulls or not.

They are nothing more than a crutch and PER, that is a complete joke.

The Sixers are #1 because even though they've played mostly mediocre teams, they've smacked them, and their point differential is by far tops in the league. When they play some decent teams, it'll balance out.

That's the important part about advanced stats: you have to look at them in context. Boozer played next to one of the top help defenders in the league in Joakim Noah, AND played for the best defensive team in the league. Rodman led the league in FG% because the only shots he takes were within five feet of the basket. Kevin Love is so high in PER because defense isn't taken into account.

When you use advanced metrics in context, they can be very useful.

It's a ranking. It's not saying the 76ers are the best in the NBA. It's a ranking compiled of all those stats.
