Will Cashner be a SP or an RP in '12?

I think if you can get the production and stamina out of him, you need to make him a starting pitcher. Especially if the team thinks "rebuild" and doesn't pick up a decent rotation guy to complement Garza, Dempster and Wells. This is assuming they don't give Z another shot and that Coleman still sucks. There's no reason to banish Cashner to the bullpen until he forces you to.

He should be a starter.

Although I wouldn't get too upset if we made him our closer and kicked Marmol's ass out of town. I think he could potentially be a solid closer.

Sweet, someone agreed with me that he'll be an awesome closer.

Would you rather have a guy who can eat 6-7 innings every 4-5 days, or a guy who pitches 1-2 innings every other day?

It all depends. I'm on the border right now, I said give him at least once more chance and go from there.

The general idea is that if the guy can provide you the same type of performance over 7 innings as he can over just one inning, you'd want to give him the 7 innings. If it's obvious that he sucks as a starter but is great as a reliever (see: Sean Marshall) then the choice is obvious.

Yeah, but to prevent injury RP is the right choice. So, it's up in the air. Let's just see what he does in the Winter and ST.

If he's going to get injured, it'll happen anyway.

It's not really our call but I think the smart thing to do is to build up his strength and give him another shot at the rotation, see what happens. If he's good you let him keep going. If he falters then you make him a bullpen guy for the rest of his career. No sense in losing out on innings of production. It's also easier to replace a reliever than it is to replace a quality starting pitcher.

I wanted to trade Marmol at the deadline when he still had value. I dont get why we didnt move a few of the guys we have.
