Banker pleads guilty in Robin Hood-like loan scheme

August 12, 2010 9:44 AM | No Comments

Jeffrey Gonsiewski fancied himself sort of a modern-day Robin Hood at a time when consumers were becoming increasingly delinquent on their bank loans.

The former vice president at First Security Trust & Savings Bank -- an Elmwood Park-based lender that's part of the Wirtz family conglomerate -- pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of federal bank fraud.

Jeffrey Gonsiewski, who was charged last month, admitted that he changed the terms of at least 100 loans for more than 50 customers to make it appear that their payments were current when in fact they were overdue.

I dont know what to think about this. If the guy truely wasnt benefitting himself in anyway shape or form. I have a hard take believing he will be punished to the maximum extent of the law.

I mean you cant condone the behavior, but still he was just trying to help a brutha out.

True but it depends on who these people were and why. And at the same time, a big reason we're in the mess is finagling books at banks. Short-changing someone else doesn't help anyone, it just shifts the burden to other people.

For all we know the people who's loans he altered ran out and bought houses they couldn't afford with government money they shouldn't have had.

Thats why the details need to be released to really formulate an opinion. If he did think he was just doing a good deed for some folks, it is misguided, but in that respect, I dont know what punishment would be appropriate.

How about you just argue with me anyway? I don't think we've had a good one yet like everyone else.
