Heard this guy talking on the radio earlier today and then since I follow him on twitter, saw him getting bashed pretty good. He has an opinion of Rose that I agree with partially but not fully.

The Case Against Derrick Rose: Sports: GQ

Overall, these are his views, not mines. But a very interesting read...

"Rose goes for either the spectacular play (a more difficult shot fading away or off balance) or the easy one (passing out of the paint) rather than going through defenders to draw the foul."

here's the first point other than derrick rose is awesome, but i hate watching him.

Let's be honest. rose is a strong 180lbs 6'3 guard. he's not the kind of player we want barrelling into crowds forcing contact. He doesn't have the body that lebron james nor corey maggette has. he's going to get injured. When rose needs to play that way, he cant, but we don't need him to play that way. It's going to ad to the longevity of his career to do otherwise.

that article was all over the place. he made several points w/o really making a criticism of rose.

If you see any other valid criticisms of rose feel free to point them out. the only one i saw was that rose doesn't draw contact. he goes for the harder play.

i'd counter with rose does draw contact, he doesn't sell contact. Also rose really doesn't need to draw more contact than he already does. Do you want him to have two ulcers?

I just read the article. I can't put anything that this guy says together. He's just blabbing on and on and on about "nothing"

The guy is saying pretty much that Rose's game attacks his basketball sensibilities. He is used to watching point guards play a certain way...Rose doesn't play that way. No point guard has played that way. So he doesn't like it...he is in the minority.

There are a lot of criticisms of Rose's game in the piece, how constructive the criticism is, is based on opinion.

Rose's style had a similar affect on me, but I didn't mind it because he is a good young player. I cannot compare him to others though and that is what Shoals was saying. He is not conventional.

I asked is it possible that Rose could be the best player amongst point guards and not actually be the best point guard per se...that was because other point guards do the conventional things better, but they are not as effective as Rose.

I kind of followed that.

And, after watching the game in its entirety tonight, I can safely say Rose is the best pg...AND the best pg per se!

I'm not the kind of fan who's bothered by this in principle. The same criticisms could be applied to the Thunder's Russell Westbrook -- Rose's workout buddy in the off-season -- but with Westbrook, each possession is an adventure. If Rose is money in the bank, the bounding, chaotic Westbrook is a bit like shooting craps in an abandoned missile silo. You expect imperfection, and flaw, from Westbrook. Rose has turned an essentially lopsided, adventurous approach into its own kind of fundamentals. Warriors guard Monta Ellis plays at times like a smaller, more lively Rose, but his limitations as an athlete force him to be more creative, resourceful and just generally less of a joyless, vacant killing machine.

that paragraph suggests he doesn't have that much of a problem with his pg play.... kinda. he says he doesn't mind the drive and kick manner of play, but then he launches into a series of similies that don't make any sense.

This guy is an idiot. The whole point is that he is mad that Rose has the physical gifts that Westbrook and Ellis don't that allow him to take his game to the next level in that style of play and not Wade's. He is not Wade, never has been, and would have a much shorter career if he played that way. Let him do his thing; it seems to be working.
