I don't think NY have the space to sign two max free agents. Not unless the cap grows unrealistically given the current financial situation. So Lebron would be playing with the current crap they have, which is far worse than what the Cavs have around him, both in terms of raw talent, and in terms of fit.
You're probably right after they pick up options and add a draft pick they won't quite have that much room, but it will be awfully close to it. They'd have 23 million guaranteed in 2010 if they pick up Gallinari and Chandler's options.
If they thought it would make a difference they might be able to use their pick or Gallinari to get Eddy Curry or Jeffries off the cap as well and make sure they have enough to sign 2 max FAs though.
I don't think it's going to come to that though, because most guys will probably be traded and extended or signed to extensions this summer anyway without reaching 2010. However, if the summer passes and a couple of those guys are out there, then I wouldn't be shocked to see the Knicks try and do Gallinari + Jeffries for an expiring and make sure they have enough room to offer Bosh + James the max. Then fill in the pieces afterwards.
Of course it's a train wreck strategy if it doesn't work, because it leaves them with absolutely nothing.
