I mean, it's his duty to bring in as much revenue as possible for the league.

2 pandemic seasons, no fans... he has to make it up elsewhere.

Getting upset about this makes no sense lmao.

They've been talking about putting ads on unis for ages now. Bettman just found an excuse to finally do so -- the NHL has always lagged behind in revenue compared to the Big 4. If you think the ads won't extend past this year -- and won't extend to jerseys eventually -- stop kidding yourself.

Exactly. It will go away, just like new (temporary) taxes, tolls, fees...

The NHL needs to make money, owners want to make money players don’t want to lose money, unfortunately something has to give. Not a popular choice by many fans but a choice to keep everyone involved smiling and cashing there ridiculous pay checks.

*sigh*

The boards and ice used to have no advertisements at all.

The divisions used to be the Norris, Smythe, Adams, and Patrick until they realized the casual fan had no idea who those people were.

The power play and penalty kill are sponsored.

There is advertising of some kind on every surface of the building.

There are digital ads visible only on television

I'm not thrilled about it, but naming the divisions after sponsors and ads on jerseys will not kill hockey.

Never been a Bettman guy but I don't see the problem with this. If it was your league and a bunch of dumbass companies told you they would pay you millions to put their name on the standings, jerseys, boards, ice, skates....hell, anything....who in their right mind would say no? Particularly now, with no ticket sales.

That’s just it, zero revenue from ticket sales. The league needed to act and they did just that.

Exactly. I don't like the ads or euro sweaters looking like NASCAR--even sometimes without the mullet, but for this year I get why they did so.

I do fear, like @Granada said, they might continue it on once the 'rona blows over.

I certainly don’t want to see advertisements on the uniforms, for me that would draw the line. I am sure with all the $$$$ the NHL has they can hire the brightest in marketing and sales to solve that issue.

I could give a shit about them losing revenue. The jerseys I don't care about, and a lot of the other things but opening up a revolving door at naming the division is disgusting and stupid. People will forget the Jersey sponsor of the 1922 whatever, people will forget who was on the ice for the 2046 season, but we hang banners for these things and it's going to really suck to look up and see Discover/Honda/Adam & Eve/McDonalds/whatever logos all over conference championship banners. I assume teams don't put the logos on jerseys when they retire them to the rafters but I don't know, I get that you need to be creative and such, but changing the names of the divisions every year isn't just about cashing in, it's going to create confusion becuase telecasts are going to have to say them, and articles printing them and we'll be in the Discover this year and the Kmart next year, then Outback Steakhouse. Next it will be the Gatorade NHL, and the Thermos Stanley Cup.

I'm not against them whoring out things and putting cars on the glass and whatnot, but there are certain things it's just going to lead to stupidity. You're going to get nicknames, and your going to see a huge battle tonight between the Bruins out of the Tampax and the Hawks out of the Sinusease

There will be ads on the ice soon.

"Toews gets ready to take the face off at the Summers Eve faceoff dot.

Summers Eve, feel like a woman.

Won by Toews...."

It's coming
