I did something like this once overheard my waiter talking to his coworker omw to have a piss saying how he was in deep shit behind on his powerbill 200 bucks and didn't know wtf he was gonna do so I tipped 200 bucks and snuck out made me feel like a cool mofo

That's because violence/fear sells, and keeps the population scared and asking for laws to protect them that remove their freedoms. Also, most good deeds are done by good people who aren't looking to broadcast their good deeds. They do it because they think it's the right thing to do, not for social recognition.
