OK, I was having a discussion with another blogger and we decided that after his suspension, Z had to be automatically added to the 40-man roster again or they had to outright him to the minors and he'd become a free agent. Z was on the 40-man roster all along and is now actually part of the active roster which expanded to 40 during September. So the news isn't that he's on the 40-man, it's that he's on the active roster. What a mindfuck!

Well he was off the 40 man-roster when he was placed on the disqualified list. Because the rosters weren't expanded, so they just kept him off. The Cubs kept him on the list until today, season end, but he was getting paid after the 30 days were up. Pretty much he was just reinstated today.

Actually cubs.com had him on the 40-man roster but not the active roster prior to his suspension as he was on the disqualified list. When he came off suspension he should automatically have taken a spot on the 40-man. So it's like he never really left. Still a bit confusing
