Ozzie Guillen and Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano recently spoke on the phone and discussed the possibility of the hurler joining the Marlins, according to Ignacio Serrano of El Nacional (Spanish link). Serrano spoke with Félix Luzón, a friend of Zambrano's who was present during the call.

Luzón says that nothing is official but a deal could be reached where the Cubs cut the 30-year-old loose and give him the $18MM that he is owed in deferred payments. Cubs manager Mike Quade recently said that he would ideally like to have Zambrano back in 2012, but didn't sound optimistic about it happening.

I would think Cubs could get something from FLA. Prolly have to pay about 15 mil but still get something. I love the Nolasco idea. 1 prolbem for another problem

Nolasco wouldn't be a bad idea..

I see he's set to make 11.5 million next season. If that trade happened, how do you think the salaries would work? Could the Cubs just pick up 6 or 7 million of Zambrano's contract and basically the Cubs would pay what Zambrano would cost and Miami would pay what Nolasco would cost?

tampering?

I think it's only tampering if they talk about money? Not sure, but I know that baseball has some weird rule(s) about tampering.

As for Nolasco, please make that happen <insert next GM's name here>! I would definitely be fine with paying 18 million for Nolasco as opposed to Z. Nolasco would be a nice 3 for this rotation and give it a lot more credibility and more importantly, depth.

Yeah, but a trade could be reached. The only problem will be getting the money down.
