Lance Briggs was walking around gingerly after the loss to the Carolina Panthers. D.J. Williams was dealing with a sore neck. Jonathan Bostic, the starter at strong-side linebacker, was being worked on during the Carolina game to address a back issue. And Shea McClellin wasn’t even able to dress because his fractured hand isn’t sufficiently healed.

None of the four were practicing on Wednesday as the Bears prepared for the Atlanta Falcons and their No. 3 yardage and scoring offense. The “starting” linebacker corps consisted of Khaseem Greene, Christian Jones and Darryl Sharpton, and the Bears are not ruling out the prospect of someone from that group being in the lineup in Atlanta.

“We’ve got guys that have got to be ready to go,” said coach Marc Trestman. “We had Khaseem in there today, Darryl was in there today, Christian was in there today. We had a couple guys we brought back, we got DeDe [Lattimore, practice squad] back, and that’s where we are.”

But while everywhere a battered linebacker was to be found, the offensive line got a boost when center Roberto Garza practiced in full after missing the last 4-1/2 games with a high-ankle sprain. Left tackle Jermon Bushrod is still not practicing, however, due to the ankle and knee injuries suffered in practice last Wednesday.

#Bears are expected to re-sign DE David Bass to the team's practice squad.

Trestman lists McManis, Vereen and Hurst as possible options in nickel situations.

Bears Sign S Shamiel Gary

The Bears filled the 53rd spot on their roster Wednesday by signing undrafted rookie safety Shamiel Gary to a one-year contract.

Gary is a 6-0, 210-pounder who played with the Patriots in the preseason and had four tackles. In college, Gary played for Oklahoma State (2012-13) and Wyoming (2009-10) and finished his career with 311 tackles, six interceptions, 26 pass break-ups and once forced fumble.

The Bears are likely to be without Chris Conte (concussion) for Sunday’s game against the Falcons, making Gary the fourth safety behind Ryan Mundy, Danny McCray and Brock Vereen.

LAKE FOREST — The Bears’ top four linebackers were among the eight players who missed practice on Wednesday.

Lance Briggs (ribs), D.J. Williams (neck), Jon Bostic (back) and Shea McClellin (hand) did not participate in Wednesday’s session. Briggs was not present, and he appeared to be favoring an injury following Sunday’s loss to Carolina.

Marc Trestman said that the Bears went with Khaseem Greene, Darryl Sharpton and Christian Jones at linebacker during practice.

Williams missed last Wednesday’s practice with a neck injury as well before returning on Thursday. Bostic missed most of the second half of the Panthers game.

Jermon Bushrod, Taylor Boggs and Ahmad Dixon also did not practice. Matt Forte was absent, which was a coach’s decision. Trestman said they just wanted to get Forte some rest.

The potentially good news for the Bears was that Chris Conte and Jeremiah Ratliff were both limited participants. Conte left Sunday’s game with a concussion, and Ratliff has not played since suffering a concussion in Week Two. He practiced last Wednesday, but missed the rest of the week.

Sherrick McManis (quad) was limited as well, and could be the Bears' No. 3 corner this week depending on his health.

Roberto Garza was a full participant in practice, so he will likely return to the starting center spot on Sunday in Atlanta for the first time since injuring his ankle in Week One.

"We’ll obviously keep our fingers crossed," Trestman said. "Certainly, we’re terribly happy to have Brian de la Puente with us. He did a very good job for us during the times he has played, and he’ll continue to work in there, but Garza practiced today and we’ll see what kind of aftereffects he has from a full day of work."

In Atlanta, Harry Douglas (foot) and Devin Hester (hamstring) did not practice. Douglas has missed the last two weeks, but Hester is expected to play on Sunday.

Getting Ratliff back is going to be HUGE!! He was playing really good before he went out. Anyone think that getting Garza back might be a downgrade?

I think we all do. Personally, I am happy for him to start against the team he first played for, but otherwise I prefer BDLP
