I don't think there is anyway the 76ers make the playoffs this year. Andre Miller meant way more to that team than people think. Their point guard position is not good, Brand seems to be pretty mediocre now, and everyone will be keying on Iguoda

I'm not a fan of this ESPN prediction series.

These clowns didn't even give Gordon a single vote for best new comer.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=OffseasonPredictions09-BestNewcomer

They go farther than that, they gave him two votes for worst new comer.

Just more proof that the worldwide leader of sports doesn't know crap in regards to the NBA.

Adrian Wojnarowski and Yahoo Sports is running laps around ESPN.

Ben Gordon is a better player than every single player on that best newcomers list, and will have a bigger impact than any of those players on that list.

It kind of seems like they just ranked these guys in order of whose team will be the best. Jamal Crawford a better newcomer than Ben Gordon? They have to be kidding.

National media doesn't have a lot of respect for Gordon...I don't know why personally.

You are right he should be on the list. He is not a better player than Jefferson, or Carter, or Hedo, or Odom, or Artest or....but he should be on the list...definitely.

Ben Gordon scored more and was more efficient of a scorer than Jefferson, had more assists, and wasn't too far behind in rebounds.

Gordon scored 0.1 PPG less than Carter, but had a much higher scoring efficieny.

Gordon scored nearly double of what Lamar Odom did, on a much higher scoring efficiency.

Gordon scored more than Hedo on a much higher efficiency.

Gordon scored more than Artest on a much, much, much greater efficiency. Artest was a much better defender, but he's a perimeter defender, and their affect on a game is only so much. Artest was a complete cancer on offense last year.

Ben Gordon is better than every single player that you listed. With the exception of Carter, none of those other players see anywhere close to the same amount of double teams that Gordon does. yet they're still all scoring less, at a much less efficiency, which says something sad about each of their offensive games.

Its also very bad to have okafor not making that list. He is going to be good in NO.

Correct, it certainly does. It says the other players are too busy playing 100% basketball then impersonating Randy Moss and taking 50% of the game off.

ESPN predictions are almost always wrong. All we have to do is look at last season to know that. However, I agree with most of the rankings, though I don't believe the 76ers will make the playoffs. Andre Miller meant ALOT to that team, more than they realize, & they will struggle with him gone.

Speaking of which, I think he should be ranked # 3 on the best newcomer list, not tied for #5. Portland finally has a legit PG to run the offesnse so Roy can roam freer now. It wouldn't be too shocking to me if the Blazers end up the 3rd best team in the West.

As for BG being on that list, don't really see it. He will be good, better than probably all those players, but Detroit's record is likely to stay virtually the same & I'm predicting a 1st rnd bow out for them.

I also think Hedo should not be on that list. I know most of you on here think the Raps are amazing now because of him, but the fact is the guy is overrated & got waaaay overpaid. Never averaged more than 20ppg, a career 42% shooter, & doesn't play a lick of defense. On a team with no D to speak of, that doesn't bode well.

You used this same crappy offensive efficiency argument to suggest that Ben is presently better at scoring than Carmelo. Bad argument, even worse is the argument that Ben is a better player than the other players named. Then you put aside Artest's defensive abilities because he is a perimeter defender. What? Just because Ben sucks at it doesn't lessen its importance. You lean on mediocre stats to tell you the opposite of what is obvious. Richard Jefferson is a better basketball player, point blank period. He is better at basketball, ALL facets of the game. He can score with Gordon and he can do everything else on the floor better than Gordon. Odom? Better ball player, he is erratic but when on top of his game, he can do much more on the court than Gordon can do. You would rather have Gordon than Vince Carter? Seriously?

I would put Carter up there with Joe Johnson among SGs, by the way, Gordon is not even Top 10 in PER for shooting guards. And Shaq is MUCH better than him in that area, who impacts games much more than Gordon does. Maybe the national media was on to something. Next year he will not have more of an impact than Jefferson, Shaq or Artest. Those are better players on much better teams.

Are you implying that Carter and Hedo play defense? Preposterous. :p

houheffna, this needs to be drilled through your heed. Apparently there is some logical disconnect there with you. But when a guy scores better than another guy, he is a better scorer than that other guy.

When two guys have similar scoring volumes, but one has a much higher scoring efficiency than the other, the one with the much higher scoring efficiency is a better scorer.

You must be adding style points when determining who is a better scorer (scratch that, Gordon scored in style). You must be adding height points into the equation for who is a better scorer, because you sure as hell aren't looking at their results as a scorer.

Here is what you don't understand. I said better BASKETBALL players. That is what I said. If it was the National Scoring Association, you might have a valid argument. But there is NO WAY he is the best basketball player on the list. That is my point.

Get this drilled through your head, just because a guy scores more points absolutely does NOT mean he is a better scorer, the team dynamic has to be focused on too. What is this player's role on the team?

My argument is different from your argument evidently. My point is that he is not the best basketball player on that list, if you think he is better at basketball than some of those players, you are delusional.

By the way double teams? Gordon sees more double teams? Don't think so. Shaq easily sees more double teams than anyone on the list. So Rose was driving to the basket uninhibited because Gordon had two guys guarding him at the three point line....yeah okay!

Again, understand...I did not say better scorer, I said better basketball player.

By the way, you are using all of these efficiency arguments. Who is responsible for TS%, PER etc...the Statfather, Mr. Hollinger I believe? Wasn't he on the panel of voters who voted AGAINST BG? I rest my case.

I agree with P03 on everything but when you look at the list, what do you see???

All those teams are top 4 in their conference (atleast by most predictions everywhere). Atlanta is 4th best in the East according to most (so called) experts so they only focused on those teams that have any chance at advancing playoffs/2nd round and beyond.

Detroit is not expected to be in the playoffs according to same analysts. So Ben Gordon is irrelevant to them.

Which is totally ridiculous. There shouldn't be any criteria about having better newcomer ONLY on a winning team.

I agree, I think Gordon will have a big time year with pistons and a much better one than most of those guys.

But I wouldn't be surprised if GOrdon is still left out of 3pt contest/all-star game even if he scored 24ppg 4rpg 5apg 46%fg 42%3pt on TON of 3pt shots - while they pick Carter for getting 17ppg 4rpg 5apg on a 2nd best East team. Coz he is on a winning team (and totally disregard that they have Dwight Howard - the best C in the NBA).

It's unfortunate that Gordon never had a luxury of having that big man that demands double team - or Gordon would have been all-star last few years. Coz that inside outside game would be SOOOOOO Deadly.

I don't know who created TS%, but it was made scientifically to equally weight 2PT FG, 3PT FG, and FT.

PER is a useless stat because it's just what Hollinger dreamed of as the perfect measure of efficiency, without having any grand reasoning for his weightings.
