50% of our payroll for next year is dedicated to Alfonso Soriano :andruw:
2013 Payroll Commitments: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com
Cubs have about $35MM committed to next season. Might as well write out your free agent wish list as long as teams don't get extension happy between now and December.
Right spending money on talent makes a team good but there have been plenty of big payroll flops like the cubs the previous two years.
I still dont see Cubs spending money this FA year. They are to worried about trying to rebuild Wrigley. They dont know who the young core is yet. We all hope its Rizzo + Jackson + Castro + Garza + Shark. But we dont know cause they wont bring them up till they can save money.
Im prolly going to get slammed for this but i notice something from that list:
•Yankees: $119MM = Good Team
•Phillies: $113MM = Good Team
•Red Sox: $108MM = Good Team
•Dodgers: $103MM = Good Team
•Angels: $92MM = Good Team
•Tigers: $87MM = Good team ( under .500 but i assume be in race all year)
•Marlins: $85MM = Good Team
•Cardinals: $85MM = Good Team
•Rangers: $84MM = Good Team
•Giants: $81MM
•White Sox: $79MM
•Reds: $74MM
•Twins: $65MM
•Mets: $55MM
•Orioles: $53MM
•Blue Jays: $52MM
•Nationals: $52MM
•Brewers: $52MM
•Rockies: $46MM
•Diamondbacks: $45MM
•Mariners: $40MM = Bad
•Royals: $35MM = Bad
•Cubs: $35MM = Bad
•Athletics: $29MM = Bad
•Rays: $19MM = Good
•Pirates: $19MM = Bad
•Astros: $17MM = Bad
•Braves: $15MM = Good
•Indians: $11MM = Good
•Padres: $11MM = Bad
So the Top 10 teams spending money next year are all good
The bottom 10 teams only 3 teams are good
So to me what makes teams good? Spending money on talent.

I bet % of top payrolls winning is more then losing
The records may eventually normalize towards what they were projected to be at before the season but money is only one part of the equation.
I swear to god you are flat out Special person, throwing money at a team works, for a whole couple years till (insert team like Phillies here) the team gets older injured and are in last place. The Phils did it the right way though. Look how long they contended. Now look at the Yanks, big money, how many championships since 2000? Old, beaten down, time is up
And the Cardinals have more rings than both the Yankees and Cubs and spent less than each in years they won.

the cubs will eventually have to spend money. you arent going to win a title with the potential of rizzo and jackson. Castro, garza and shark. They will have to get 2 corner outfielders, a 3bsmn, a ss because castro will be moved to 2b and barney sucks.
rotation will be:
garza
shark
blank
blank
blank
and a bullpen.
