I think the point someone made in another thread about there being only 8 teams is everything. These Cubs would obviously wipe the floor with the 27 Yankees. Ruth, Gehrig, Meusel be damned. Sure those guys could play in any era, but they couldn't hit .350 in any era. Please. Better athletes, faster, stronger, better trained from childhood can't hit .350.
If you face the same pitchers (and 9 innings a game often times) every 4 or 5 days, all season and then face them in the playoffs, and there are only 35 pitchers to learn....just imagine what Rizzo would do with the chance to know 35 pitchers. In his case the diffusion might work against the pitchers because he is a unique at bat, but a guy like Manny Ramiriz would have hit .450 if he saw the same 30 pitchers all year.
I'm no longer that impressed by the old numbers knowing that. Look at what we did to Kershaw, one of the best ever after getting practice swings on him 5 days earlier.
The game has evolved and gotten better, more perfected.
