I'm a Butler fan... but this is the third team he's having an ugly issue with. Probably would have happened with Philly if he stayed there long enough. You can argue that some of the issues he has had have been legit, but man.... the dude is starting to seem like a cancer himself.
Starting? He should have had that label after Minnesota.

My biggest issue here is that the only teams trading for a 35 year old Jimmy Butler is a contending team. So he gets to pull this shit in Miami, and will get the reward of (probably) going to a conference finals.

I question any contending team being able to trade for him given cap issues with luxury tax and its limitations.

I guess we'll see.

In supposed efforts to prep for a Jimmy Butler trade, the Suns have traded an unprotected 2031 1st rounder to Utah for 3 conditional 1sts in 2025, 2027, and 2029. They'll be the worst of the Jazz, Cavs, or TWolves picks in '27 and '29 and the worst of Cavs or TWolves in '25.

This would be like Boston trading Larry bird in 1985 because they were worried about his back

Unless Luka secretly has super AIDS in his ankles or knees this trade doesnt make any sense for the Mavs. Super high % chance this gets looked at as one of the worst trades of the last few years. The more I think about it the less I get it and I didnt get it at all to start...

Just looking around X it appears that the Mavs did not think the $325M supermax was worth trusting Luka to keep up with his conditioning.

What I really don't understand is the Mavs only getting a 2029 pick, seems like they could have gotten some much sooner.

This sounds like a trade you'd see in 2k trade finder that you'd accept knowing it was unrealistic.

The saddest person today is probably Zach LaVine now that a trade to the Lakers is off the table.

Yeah, this trade blew my mind. Never saw it coming.

Thinking about it, though, I can see why the Mavs would decide on moving on from him. If after 7 years, you're still having concerns about Luka's conditioning and weight, it likely won't change... especially after you give him over 300 million next summer.

Giving up on your future to try and win a ring in the next two years is an interesting decision by the Mavs (especially considering they were JUST in the Finals.). It's obvious the Lakers are thinking about life after LeBron, as this move, I think, actually hurts their chances this year.

I'm also incredibly annoyed. How do the Lakers keep getting so lucky?

To give up an aging, injury prone AD, and just ONE first round pick for a 25-year old superstar?

It really makes no sense...

Again, I can step back and see why the Mavs thought about moving on from Luka... but they could have gotten back MUCH more in return.

I'm sure other teams would have given up a star player and like 4 first rounders. This seems so fucking odd.

The Knicks gave up 5 first rounders for Mikal Bridges. The Lakers gave up one that is four years from now.

Shits rigged. Lebron must have told Silver that he's retiring.

Even considering all those concerns the Mavs may have with him (which are pretty overblown for a 25yo 5x 1st Team All-NBAer who just took his team to the finals, and had already been to the western conference finals before that), it was still complete franchise malpractice to not at least shop him for a better deal.

The 'conspiracies' that the league wants a star in LA post-LeBron and that the Mavs owners are trying to move the team to Las Vegas make more sense than whatever the GM is trying to sell us, because they just straight up nuked their franchise—the front office comes off as incompetent, fans are pissed off and no player will want to go there after they intentionally just screwed one of the top 5 players in the world out of a super max deal.
