This is an exercise I tried to get going a couple years ago. Everybody is a genius with hindsight, saying we could've drafted player X instead of who we got 3-4 years after the fact.

In this thread call your shot now. How would you have used the picks differently, or the same, as we did this draft?

Rules:
  • No additional trades
    • Can't say you would've traded up to get a player if that didn't happen in the draft
    • No additional trade downs than what we did this draft
  • Player must be available at the pick
    • Ashton Jeanty was gone at 6, can't say you would've drafted him at 10
I'll start:

1.10-Mykel Williams, Edge, UGA-We have no depth at edge. I think he'll be a starter in a year or two when we need to get rid of Sweat

2.39-Luther Burder, WR, Mizzou-I like the value here. We're an injury away from relying on Zaccheus or Tyler Scott

2.56-Kaleb Johnson, RB, Iowa-I'm not comfortable relying on Roschon to be RB2 and Johnson would've been a good compliment to Swift

2.62-Omar Norman-Lott, DT, Tenn-I think he's a better football player than Turner. With board on the board I would've preferred ONL.

4.132-Jalen Rivers, OT, Miami-Versatile OL. Can play tackle and guard. Could develop into a starter at either position.

5.169-Gavin Bartholomew, TE, Pitt-Move TE to play with Kmet. This he was underrated and more athletic than he gets credit for.

6.195-Breshard Smith, RB, SMU-Dynamic RB. Former WR with sub-4.4 40

7.233-Nazir Stackhouse, DT, UGA-Big body DT to sub for Billings

Are you saying that you wouldn't make the #10 overall pick a starter for "a year or two"? I'm sure you're imagining him being heavily involved in the rotation, but still...

I wanted Dylan Sampson before the trade down in the fourth. Unfortunately, he went to a team where he probably isn't going to get the touches needed to show what he can do, but I think he could have done great things in this offense.

1.10-Mykel Williams, Edge, UGA- We can't get to the QB

2.39-Aireontae Ersery, OT, Minny- Swing depth, fighting for spot this year, LT next year.

2.56-Tate Ratledge, OG, UGA- I don't think Jackson is good or will stay healthy

2.62-Shemar Turner, DT, AandM- Loved the pick and value imo

4.132-Jalen Royals, WR, Utah State- Shifty, would've filled the slot perfectly

5.169- Devin Neal, RB, Kansas- Fast, can catch, would be fun to watch with BJ

6.195-Kobe King, LB, PSU- Solid run stopper and diagnosis well, played in some big time games.

7.233-Sebastian Castro, S, Iowa- Our SS branes are fried

I'm feeling better about Loveland than I did Thursday night, even if I think it's too high for a TE. And don't really care to re-order/undo trades, etc...

So the only pick I would confidently do differently is the Ruben Hyppolite II pick - I would change that to Joshua Farmer, DT, Florida State. I think he's a safe DL rotational player at worst, and that's more valuable to me than a 5'11" LB who can fly around on special teams.

Not going to redraft the whole thing, but I would go Mykel Williams or Walter Nolen (whether the Bears see Turner as a DE than can play some DE or a DT that can play some DE respectively) at 10 and then TE later in the draft, for ease of comparison lets say Harold Fannin Jr. at 62 with all other picks/trades being the same. I think the drop off from Loveland to one of the other TEs - i guess im tying my wagon to Fannin here - is going to be smaller than the bump up from Turner to Williams/Nolen.

I trust Ben Johnson to build a good team and I dont think the decisions they made in this draft get in the way of that, but hes also human and doing this for the first time so its crazy to me for fans to think he's infallible or not going to make some mistakes along the way as he navigates the learning curve of being a first time head coach. That doesnt mean im writing these guys off, ill be rooting like hell for everyone they picked to be the best at their position in the NFL.

Actually I probably also go Mbow with that 4th instead of the LB but I think thats nitpicky compared to the bigger picks.

I'd give you mine but I might as well have CC'd this. Without knowing what would be there at 62 I'd probably have taken Nolen in 1 so yours works better as the top Edges are gone by 62. I may have still taken Turner there and told him to concentrate on DE which he's viable for in this D.

The issue with these options are the T. If we need one this year, what the Bear did works better.

I wish I knew what the risks were with Green because for me, optimum would have been this
Nolen
Burden
Green
Carson Vinson - We're in project range now and he's got the stats for LT... next year.
Crosby-Merritt or Smith
Some random pass catching TE or giant WR I can teach to block. Maybe De'corian

I like Mykel Williams & Nolen.

I'll say Loveland ends up a solid NFL tight end/slot guy at most.
