As much as I do believe it's important to embrace the positive side of humanity ignoring problems doesn't solve them. Sometimes things that are difficult are painful, but necessary.
At the same time that's what saturates our TVs. Especially the news. The uplifting, inspirational stories are usually a side note. I read the first 3 or 4 pages of the other thread over the last few days but couldn't keep going back to it. Sometimes, avoiding the worlds negativity for a few days is necessary.

I don't think we should ignore the problems that we face. at the same time I think as a whole we need to embrace the good rather than giving so much attention to negativity.

Does that solve the problem? No. But for me, I appreciate the good stories over the bad ones. When I turn on the news, I'm sick and tired of the 40 minutes they give to negative stories, 15 minutes of commercials, and 5 minutes of good news (if we are lucky enough to have it)

Those 26 acts of kindness would have been a 5 minute segment on a local newscast, that's if we are lucky. The rest is filled with negativity and doom, sometimes lasting several days with follow-up stories.

Burying your head in the sand is why events like Sandy Hook, VT, and Columbine happen.... Please don't bury your heads in the sand and ignore the negative aspects of humanity. It does no good. I have three kids that I look to for my happiness, so spending time debating and thinking about terrible, disgusting events like what happened Friday is possible. If I start feeling too down, I just go spend time with my kids.

I also agree entirely with Ton. The media looks for negative stories above all else, because "car wrecks" are what sells.

I agree. A few days, really any breaks from the horrible shit that dominates the world, is good for people. And sadly the reason there is so much terrible news in the media is because people are often doing terrible things to each other. That's the part we need to work on. We need to stop doing that and do more of what's happening in these photographs. I just sometimes worry that the reaction to this kind of tragedy turns into soft journalism and only telling stories about cat shows in old folks' homes. Which are great, (I would totally attend) but not hard hitting news pieces.

And to give some perspective this is coming from someone who looks at cute otter and kitten videos daily to cleanse my brain of humanity's awfulness.
