That Luther Burden pick is looking more problematic by the day. If he holds out now, on top of the practices he's already missed, I would be shocked if he had a productive rookie season.

Like it or not, the Bears are also better off caving on this stand still and giving all these 2nd rounders their guaranteed money. They honestly can't afford to have 3 super important players missing extended time in camp before the season starts. It's not worth the risk.

I hear CLE is petitioning the league for a uniform waiver this season allowing ankle monitoring devices to be considered a standard part of their uniforms.
There will be a new form of NIL when you're allowed to sell space on the ankle bracelet to a 3rd party company.

I’m not really worried about this. It will happen
We can reasonably estimate Turner's contract now that Collins has signed.

Braxton Jones being on the PUP list hurts the Bears with Ozzy. Burden is probably going to be fully guaranteed after Higgins signed. Especially considering most people probably had Burden ahead of Higgins in their rankings.*

This seems like an odd hill to die in if you’re trying to be a players first GM. And that’s what Poles said he was trying to do when we got fleeced by Pittsburgh in the fields trade.

Right now the only picks who have been signed were drafted 33, 34, and 43. Alfred Collins is the outlier here. It's perfectly reasonable for Browns, Dolphins, and Patriots to wait and see what Seattle gives Nick Emmanwori before they sign their players. The Burden domino should fall once Treveyon Henderson signs.

You can still be a players first GM while still making the right financial decision.

My guess is Burden will get the fully guaranteed deal because that Saints QB is probably going to get it. The other two will fall in line like pick 43.

How much longer do you think the teams will not be guaranteeing 2nd round pick contracts? Do you think it’s worth losing development from Burden, Turner, and Trapilo over something that won’t matter in a few years?

Personally, I don’t see the problem. If you’re striking out so bad that you don’t want to keep a player around on his rookie contract as a second round pick, then you deserve the cap hit.

This is much ado about nothing. Eighty four percent of 2nd round picks get a second contract. So only 1 in 6 players would be additional dead cap space and only a little over 1% of the cap per year at that. The Bears have had 12 2nd round draft picks since 2015 with 42 cumulative seasons and none 4 years into their career has played less than 4 seasons, only Shaheen and Miller didn't complete 4 seasons as a Bear and Ant Miller being the only one to not complete a fourth NFL season( @HeHateMe ).

So this is owners pissing and moaning to posture about what has amounted to, for the Bears, less than 0.05% of their cap space over the last 10 seasons

And the 2nd rounders are already getting like 60% of their contract guaranteed. So they are basically fighting over what is essentially 1m a year when the player is extremely likely to be on the team, and even if he doesnt he will make it to year 3

I think this has more to do with if they cave for 2nd rounders then 3rd rounders will be next and it will set a slippery slope to guaranteeing all nfl rookie deals

Either way I fully expect these guys to all sign by camp.

Now that #43 signed a non fully guaranteed contract, we probably get our later 2nds signed to standard deals before camp. Burden could be an issue. He feels slighted to fall that far and even the Bear said they took him because he was BPA with a #1 grade. My guess is that the fully guaranteed contracts run through about 40 this year. Saints will want Shough in camp and he's a QB.

Judkins could hold things up. If he gets a standard type deal due to his arrest, the next few guys will argue it was circumstantial and not relative to their bargaining position. I also suspect he may take a while to sign if the Browns want to hold his arrest against his contract situation.

Bears should try and get our later 2 done quickly with standard type deals and then concede to Burden at the start of camp... regardless of where the signing pecking order is at that time.

You still have time before camp starts.

Its like 250k a year. If the bears dont sign burden over that then kevin warren deserves to be shot on 5th avenue by orange cheeto man

I think everyone would rejoice

I think Shough is the domino that must fall first. Judkins is an outlier with different circumstances now.
