This.

Also the best way to train for a 5k is to train close to 10k per day. Also get as much sleep as you can. Good luck and try to get sub 20

Not really anymore....and my knees/hips/ankles hurt like shit from that mindset when I was younger (could be my time in the military too).

There are great run programs that have you running, walking, running, walking..etc at intervals that start below a 5k and up to a 5k that can get many people to run a 5k in sub 30 (that have never run on and are not really in shape), within a month. Sub 20 in 3-4 months. Some of this was born with concepts developed for first time Marathoners being able to complete one with one year of training.

Nerves will serve you well. Don't sweat it. Sounds like you're ready and will do great. Like I said you're already a winner for doing it. Many people would never even attempt it. Good on you and best of luck.

And I'm alive!!!

Thankful that I went with two eight year olds. We jogged maybe half and walked the rest. They got a lot of shin splints and rib cage cramps. Finished just under 45 min. I think I could have maybe shaved 5-7 minutes but it's not a race. It's supporting my girls. My oldest ran in 32 so I am hoping by jun 7 I can be around 36-37.

So thankful for all the advice and especially Prope for the shoe advice.

I love my Brooks!!!!

Training again on Saturday if it doesn't rain

At 6'5 7/8" and a wide upper body frame, I'm still an ectomorph, and despite it being difficult for me to weigh under 200 pounds without being emaciated, I was a natural gazelle runner with long strides due to my thin bones.

That was fine when I was 18-25. The joint stress became too much. I know you like your new shoes, but I am hoping they have a low degree heel to toe angle.

Research "natural" running. It comes second nature to shorter folks, but basically shortening your stride, moving away from the Nike mistake of putting a fat 17 degree heel under you, you can still have cushing its just platformed different.

the idea is you take more steps, shorter steps, and you land on the entire shoe so it spreads out the weight of impact. the shoes are designed to roll forward from this entire animal pad impact.

I recommend it to anyone over 30, or over 200 pounds. It really saved me and got me back into running. I live in Colorado and am more of a middle distance guy, 1/2 mile to 10k.

I wish I could find some Cleidsdale runs(over 210) in the middle distances out there, I would love to compete at about 8% body fat and still be a cleidsdale.

This post above should not be missed for interested runners either. He knows what he is saying. My brother hated running his entire life, and found something like this. There is research behind the run/walk interval approach. Your muscles can recover while you walk and you end up conserving enough energy to finish faster for beginners. Its a great way to break yourself into running.

My 65 year old mother is doing it now actually, first time she ran in her life. Blonde 6'1" 160 DD's, wide hips, she a big lady naturally. I'm actually surprised but I taught her about intervals and she has been pushing the envolop.

My grandmother was 6'5" in 1917, set the womans record for amateur standing broad jump back before they got rid of it. Fortunately my fathers side isn't giants, I already can't afford to eat enough.

Yeah, 8 is fine as long as you are smart about it. My daughter is 6 and runs an occasional 5k.

Ran for my first time since the 5 k and I did 2.1 miles in 24:22. I feel good about it. Just need to get another mile in there.
