Can we list Gretzky 5 times? The guy dominated his sport in a fashion that no one comes close to in any other.

Outside of the clear #1 it gets murky real quick. Era, sport, "level of dominance," et cetera, make that extremely difficult. But, Gretzky is #1 without a question.

None of these lists are correct. Top 5 athlete lists need Jim Thorpe.

I think top one athlete list needs Jim Thorpe.

Yeah, no one will ever touch his career stats.

Billy Jean King is the only female for me that pops in my head for most dominate athlete. And one other but I have vague memories of seeing stories on her. Zacharius or something like that from like the 30's.

EDIT: Babe Didrikson..Thanks Omleletpants

Serena Williams is more dominant than BJK.

Seriously though about Gretzky. He was the most dominant athlete period. If you took away all of the goals he scored, he'd still be the most prolific point scorer in NHL history. That's dominance.

I'd say:

1) Gretzky;
2) Jordan;
3) Jerry Rice;
4) Babe Ruth; and
5) Usain Bolt

Cael Sanderson hasn't been on anyone's list. Shame.
