REPORT — Bob McKenzie confirms that <strong class='bbc'>Michal Handzus[/b] has re-signed with the Chicago Blackhawks.
During the 2013 season Handzus scored one goal, added five assists, and a plus-7 rating in 11 regular-season games for the Blackhawks. In the playoffs, he contributed another three goals, eight assists, and a plus-7 rating in 23 games.
Largely interested in his face-off abilities, the Blackhawks acquired him from the San Jose Sharks at the trade deadline for a 4th round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. During the regular-season Handzus delivered by winning 55.0% of his draws. When the playoffs rolled around, his numbers dipped significantly (46.4%), but we would learn after the season that he was playing with a broken wrist and torn MCL during the Stanley Cup Finals and could have had a significant impact in his effectiveness at the dot.
The terms of the deal are more than fair: Stan Bowman was able to sign him to a one year deal worth $1 million, included with that is a No Movement Clause (NMC), meaning the Blackhawks cannot send him to the minors or trade him without his consent.
If Handzus can translate his production in Chicago this past season to the 2013-2014 season, he would be projected to produce 41 points over a full 82 game schedule. For $1 million, that sounds like a steal to me. Perhaps it's not the type of numbers you would expect from a second line center, but more than serviceable for the price as a third line center.
