Finally, Corey Crawford won a goalie battle. Both goaltenders were tested with 27 shots but Crawford beat Jonathan Quick by making the extra save - literally in the final seconds of the game stoning Anze Kopitar for the buzzer beater to help the Hawks complete the Circus trip with a 3-3 record.
Corey wasn't the only Hawk to play well, Marcus Kruger tipped Duncan Keiths shot just wide of the cage with Andrew Brunette picking up the puck and finding enough time to complete a wraparound.
The second goal was nearly identical, beginning with Keith taking a shot from the point. Instead, this time Viktor Stalberg was there to tip the puck just wide of the left post and Jonathan Toews completed the play by beating Quick.
Once again, the team captains came through with another big performance: Keith grabbing two assists and Toews with the game-winning goal. This is what the Blackhawks need to win, these guys need to hit the scoresheet on a consistent basis and be impact players night in and out.
The Blackhawks are now 9-0-1 when scoring first, once again leading the Western Conference with a 14-7-3 record. Although that may be deceiving, keep in mind they have played 1-2 more games than everyone in the conference, including Detroit and Minnesota... both having 2 games at hand and only trail 2 points behind the Blackhawks.
STAL-BLUNDER
Around 8 minutes into the 2nd period, Patrick Kane and Viktor Stalberg boomed up the ice all alone on Jonathan Quick. Kane put the puck right in the wheel-house of Stalberg, who flubbed the puck about 3 feet wide of a gaping net.
The Kings ended up tying the game moments later on a shanked shot by Stoll. Fortunately, the Blackhawks kept momentum steady and did not let it effect the outcome of the game.
Of course Stalberg will gain a ton of flack for missing a perfect opportunity like that, but I don't hear anyone coming up with a better solution for the 1st line LW spot... 12 points 15 games since being placed there. Over a full season that's 65+ points.
