At the opening face-off there was high-paced end-to-end action for both teams. Jonathan Quick robbed the Hawks with a scramble in front of the net and gave the Kings enough energy to find the puck and spark a 4-on-1 the other way. Seabrook played himself out of position as the puck fluttered to Voynov who finished the play, Emery got a piece of the puck but it wasn't enough.
Minutes later, Andrew Shaw committed a high-sticking penalty with 15:31 remaining in the 1st period. The Kings displayed solid puck movement, hammering three shots on net but the Hawks were able to clear the puck three times to kill the penalty.
The Kings were able to put enough pressure on the forecheck to hammer 14 shots on Emery mid-way through the 1st period. Although they were out-shot by a large margin, they had no issues matching the Kings intensity, out-hitting them eight to six. Certainly not the start Joel Quenneville was looking for after a promising chance was flubbed early in the game.
Brandon Bollig and Kyle Clifford dropped the mitts 12 minutes into the game. Both had no problem firing punches, overall a great scrap with a lot of connections.
The Hawks calmed down for the remainder of the period by playing a neutral zone trap and began to gain more possession as the period winded down, with Jamal Mayers gaining the best chance of the period off a rebound chance shot by Duncan Keith.
Dustin Penner finished out the period with a delay of game penalty. The Kings cleared the puck twice early in the kill, but the Hawks gained a bit of momentum as the power-play grew on, still unable to dent the twine with only one shot.
The 2nd period started off somewhat slow, with both teams unable to gain possession over the blue line and a lot of hot potato plays and passes from both sides. Eventually the Kings took control and gained possession of the puck, placing pressure in the Chicago zone for a few minutes.
Shortly after, the Blackhawks picked themselves up and had multiple scoring chances for the remainder of the period after Brent Seabrook lit up Justin Williams behind the Blackhawks net to spark the bench.
Despite the Blackhawks ability to gain the majority of possession from that point on, it was a boring first half of the 2nd period. However the last half was full of energy as Brent Seabrook sent a perfect slap pass to Dave Bolland, camping at the side of the open cage but hit the iron on the best chance that the Blackhawks had all game. The Kings picked up the puck and had a chance of their own but Emery came up large, putting some excitement back into the game.
After the next face-off, Drew Doughty was tagged with a hooking call which the Blackhawks displayed good puck movement but the Kings were able to read the play all the way even with Stoll missing his stick for half the kill.
One shift after the power-play was killed, Marcus Kruger finally solved Jonathan Quick, who was vying for his 9th straight period of shutting out the Hawks. Viktor Stalberg trotted the puck into the zone but as he ran into some trouble he found a way to get the puck to an open Patrick Sharp who fired the puck at a diving Drew Doughty; the rebound popped right to Marcus Kruger who potted his 9th of the year to tie the game 1-1.
Unfortunately, Los Angeles regained the lead after a turnover by Keith and Leddy at the side of the Blackhawks net with Jeff Carter picking up the puck and darting the puck between Emery's legs to end the 2nd period.
Early in the 3rd period Andrew Shaw limped to the bench in pain but returned for his next shift. The Hawks displayed solid forechecking the first half of the final frame of regulation, hoping to mount a comeback by keeping the pressure in the Kings zone. Four minutes into the period Dave Bolland had a glorious chance but Quick got a piece of the puck with his glove, keeping the game at 2-1.
Five minutes into the period, Stalberg split the defense and gained a break but was taken down for a penalty shot. He went wide to the right side and fired a shot low to the right side which Quick stopped.
A few shifts later, Hossa drove to the net like a bull and Patrick Kane finished the play by prying the puck loose from Quick to tie the game. For the remainder of the game the Hawks had several chances by stuffing the puck on Quick.
The last half of the 3rd period was really physical as the intensity ramped up -- both teams had no issue with laying the body and taking their bumps and bruises.
With 2:44 remaining in regulation time, Stalberg took a hooking call after racing to win the puck deep in the Kings zone. The Hawks were able to clear the puck six times as well as a blocked shot by Hjalmarsson to kill the penalty and maintain momentum heading into overtime.
Plenty of end-to-end action in extra time, but neither team was able to get a real quality scoring chance on net as both teams did an excellent job clogging lanes and blocking shots. Kane tried another spin-o-rama pass to Hossa again but Justin Williams did a great job on the back-check by deflecting the pass wide of Hossa's stick. On the ensuing face-off, Jeff Carter swept the puck towards the net but missed from a sharp angle in close as the clock wound down.
In the shootout, both goalies were perfect through five rounds but Mike Richards finally broke the deadlock by blowing a puck by Emery. Kruger took the last atttempt but was poked away by Quick.
