The Blackhawks defeated the Red Wings in their first contest of the season. Detroit has crept within three points before this game but with a win the Blackhawks found themselves five points ahead of the Division lead as well as two points ahead of the Canucks for the Conference lead.

Dan Carcillo kicked off the game with a bang, blowing up Todd Bertuzzi that didn't make the big man happy. Big Bert went right after Carcillo and they exchanged a few punches. Both of them were tagged with a five minute fighting major which baffles me considering Bertuzzi chased Carcillo down to fight him after he was hit. Isn't this what the instigator is for?

Either way, Detroit jumped ahead with the lead before Jonathan Toews was awarded a penalty shot which he ripped past Jimmy Howard with his patented five-hole shot.

"I mean he fires it," Howard said. "He zips it there, but I thought I should've had it. That's his move to go five hole, so I was prepared for it. I just didn't get the legs closed fast enough. I've faced him a couple of times on penalty shots and that's what he does every single time, so I figured that's what he was going to do. I figured he was going to go five hole and he beat me. He's a good player."

In the second period, Bertuzzi tipped a shot from Commodore for the Wings to take the lead once again, but it was short lived--Marian Hossa took a snap shot from a stoppable angle but Howard couldn't handle it and allowed the Blackhawks to tie it. From then on, it was the Blackhawks show going into the 3rd period.

The top line of Carcillo, Toews and Hossa was dynamite but Sharp, Kane and Stalberg didn't want to be left out of the mix either. Both lines had great puck possession all game and finally the 2nd line was rewarded in the final frame with Kane sending the puck back to the point for Seabrook to blast it past Howard, giving the Blackhawks their first lead which would stand as the game-winner.

Corey Crawford played well again, stopping 26 shots. He may get the start against the Oilers considering Ray Emery was blown up in the last meeting with Edmonton and Corey's resurgence as the #1.

ROOKIE NOTES

Jimmy Hayes played his first NHL game with Jamal Mayers and Andrew Brunette. His 8:23 TOI was 2nd least on the team but he made every shift count with 4 hits, 2 shots on goal and 1 blocked shot. He also committed a holding infraction for a two minute penalty which seemed questionable at best.

Overall, the Hayes bro looked fairly comfortable in the line-up and didn't look out of place at all. He was effective on the physical end and had a few chances to bury his first NHL goal. If he can keep finding the puck, especially with limited ice-time, he'll be an effective player for the future.

BLACKHAWKS STARS OF THE GAME

1. Jonathan Toews

2. Brent Seabrook

3. Marian Hossa

Why don't goalies just close their 5 hole when Toews has a penalty shot or in a shoot out?

WAY TO GO CAPTAIN!!

Nice win tonight Hawks.

Didn't really get to focus in the game 100% but from what i did see it was good. Wins all that matters esp against those *******.

nice just asked about hayes in the gameday thread.

he seems to be hustling and i saw his 4min in the first i thought was impressive. Obviously as the game got older and tighter he was cut down, but good for him.

Was a pretty solid effort. Both teams hit the post a couple of times.

I was talking to Troy Murray after the game and we'd like to know exactly WHY Bert the criminal did not recieve 2-5-10 after he went after Carcillo. Twice, Bickell and Scott have gotten the extra 12 minutes, and Bickell for the same exact thing bertuzzi did. NHL Officiating is so fucking in consistent it's amost fucking comical.

How many points did Datsyuk have tonight? Let me check.

Oh and SEABROOK!!!!!! For the W!

Yeah that was some weird officiating. Were they actually new refs, I can't remember their names, I know Foley had trouble saying them, but that's probably because of the bottle. Some weird late/too early whistles on pucks in the crease, weak ass calls, including that phantom hook on Toews which gave him the penalty shot.

Good point about Bert. He went hunting for Carcillo as soon as he got up. Skated across the ice directly to him.

Not phantom...weak, maybe....but not phantom. Toews is a stud's stud...

Don't get me wrong, I love watching Toews take a penalty shot more than any other player, but that was probably one of the worst calls that I've seen to give a player a penalty shot, that I've seen anyway. He just barely touched him with the end of the blade of his stick, let alone actually hook him. Not good officiating all the way around.

One, unrelated, thing I don't understand, why can't the linesmen call penalties?

I could be wrong, but with Bickell and Scott they were not the one's hit. In any case, I agree that if you are going to have that 2-5-10 rule, then Bert should have gotten it.

In any case, excellent game by both teams. Besides the post luck (for both teams), the 'Hawks just simply out gassed the Wings last night. Good to see that as well as it reminds some of the bridge jumpers that the 'Hawks can in fact do so, but do not need to do it every game.

Toews 5 hole shot was wicked hard. After seeing the replay I am not surprised that Howard barely moved.

Hayes looked good. Not going to be surprised if he is up for a few more games. Too bad he did not get his 1st NHL goal on his 1st NHL shot.

Carcillo showed again that he does have other talents. He did not look bad on that brief trip with Toews and Hossa...but I think that should just be brief during any game.

Now on the blowing out the Oilers on Monday.

Bickells was identical, Scott was the "3rd" man in so to speak. Bickell recieved 2-5-10. Bertuzzi although doing the exact same thing Bickell did with Sarich, 5 just like Carcillo. Double standard or inconsistant officiating. Pick your poison.

Linesman do call two penalties. TMM and an occassional high stick, drawing blood, that the officials on the ice miss.

Other than that off sides, Icing, and dropping the puck is what they do.

Not even.

Bertuzzi asked Carcillo to fight after the hit and Carcillo COULD have said no, but he didn't.

That is way different than John Scott coming in and jumping Engelland.

I do NOT agree with the instigator rule but it was correctly applied to Scott and correctly NOT applied to Bertuzzi.

I may be wrong, but they don't actually CALL the penalty; they tell one of the refs what they saw, then the ref actually "calls" the penalty.

It's no different than Bickell though Mr. Expert.

Bickell was hit by Sarich. Like Bertuzzi he didn't like the hit and chased Sarich down. They both dropped the gloves. Bickell recieved 2-5-10.

Yes, but those are the penalties they are responsible for. Sorry they also call DOG when the pucks shot into the crowd from the D zone.

Did you see any mention of the Bickell hit, Mr. Expert? I was directly relating it to what happened to Scott vs. Engelland.

The correct non-call was made last night and it should have been a non-call on Bickell as well.

Imagine the resulting clusterfuck if they could call everything. Games would last 6 hours.
